Well, actually the donkey got together with the dragon at the end so there goes that theory.
Other than that, why don’t you people relax. It’s just a cartoon. God forbid a movie is made that pokes fun of anyone.
This is a perfect example of a ‘short joke’ that’s actually an ‘overcompensating twit’ joke. The joke isn’t that he’s short, it’s that he’s gone through the trouble to rig up a saddle with fake legs and a bridle with fake arms so that he can pretend he’s not.
The reason I didn’t like Shrek was the abundance of “fart jokes” and sexual innuendo in what was apparently a movie intended for kids. It had such potential to be actually clever, and they had to sink to that for the humor. Examples:
(from the Duloc song) “Please keep off of the grass, shine your shoes, wipe your…[dolls bend over, facing away from the camera, then turn around]…face!”
Donkey: “…and then I ate some rotten berries. Man, I had strong gasses eking out of my butt that day.”
Magic Mirror: “Bachelorette number two is a cape-wearing girl from the land of fancy. Although she lives with seven other men, she’s not easy.”
Donkey: “Ooh! Shrek! Did you do that? Man, You gotta warn somebody before you just crack one off. My mouth was open and everything.”
Shrek: “Believe me, Donkey, if it was me, you’d be dead.”
Monsieur Hood: “I like an honest fight and a saucy little maid.”
Merry Men: “What he’s basically saying is he likes to get–”
Monsieur Hood: “…Paid.”
And so on. Simply pathetic, and the Academy ought not encourage it.
Not to mention, the movie featured an absolutely wretchedly awful song during the “Shrek and Fiona pine for one another” scene. Yarg, made my ears bleed…
I don’t think Shrek was intended for kids–I think it was aimed at teens and adults.
More specifically, it seemed to be a movie for those of us who find Disney’s animated films too wimpy and safe.
And Max, if you thought that the use of “Hallelujah” during the wonderful montage sequence was awful, all I can say is de gustibus, dude.
No no no, everyone knows Toy Story 2 is a modern animated classic!
Shrek was pretty good, but those fart jokes and short jokes won’t help it achieve “timeless” status. And I thought the situation vis-a-vis the princess was revealed too early in the script…
