I literally have no idea what was even supposed to be funny about "The Hangover"

I had a couple of people who usually have pretty good taste in movies rave about it, so I watched it with my wife and we basically thought “Meh”. It felt derivative of pretty much every “Bunch of mates get drunk, wake up in the morning and try to piece together what happened last night” cliche, and just wasn’t the Comedy Of The Year that everyone was making it out to be, IMHO.

Wow, I had no idea that that many people didn’t like it. It’s interesting how everybody’s taste is so different. I wonder on a first date if you had somebody you liked watch it with you, one found it hilarious, the other barely cracking a smile, what would this do to the relationship? I’d be thinking this just isn’t going to work. I’d definitely be asking her about other tastes in movies and what she likes, to see if our tastes were that far off from one another.

I thought it was hilarious, and enjoy watching it on HBO… I liked the unpredictability of the plot and found most of the gags quite funny…Tyson waiting until the rum solo was over before laying out the brother-in-law was especially funny, and the photo montage at the end…

I enjoyed it, and I don’t usually dig that kind of humor. I would certainly not call it the funniest movie ever (or even of the year, probably), but I laughed and came out liking it.

I fucking loved this movie. I’m a young [del]adult[/del] male who saw it with his bros in the theater. That’s the intended experience. There’s a lot of women and older men who don’t like it. The makers of the movie were never trying to impress you.

And yeah, I’m sure I’m going to get a bunch of young adult males who saw the movie with their friends telling me they hated it. My point remains.

Hmm. Gotta say I quite enjoyed it. I’m a mid 30’s male if that makes a difference.

It was by no means revolutionary comedy, and had several tried and tested tropes in it, but I got a good amount of laughs out of it.

I didn’t despise it and it had plenty of laughs but it was no better or funnier than a dozen others like it. Superbad, RoleModels, HotTubTimeMachine, She’sOut OfMyLeauge, SavingSilverman, WeddingCrashers, etc. etc.
Definetly a “it’s pretty funny and worth watching” little comedy but surely doesn’t deserve any type of crown some people want to put on it.

TheKid came home one day, said we had to see it. She thought it was hysterical.
We rented it.
Yes, some laughs, but nothing like she was going on about.

“Kid? Were you with the guys?” (Her primary circle of friends is a group of 8 guys and one other girl)
“Yeah”
“Were you all stoned when you watched it?”
“uhhhhh…yeah”

Thought so.

And THIS is why it is necessary to jail people for years for possessing pot! I tried to warn you!

What are you people? A bunch of humorless robots? What’s not funny about The Hangover?

BRRRRRR* DOES…NOT…COMPUTE…HUMOR…CHIP…MALFUNCTION…SHUTTING DOOWWWWNNN…

I personally haven’t had anyone try to claim this as the funniest movie ever; most people with whom I’ve talked to are tepid about the movie.

I found it pretty fucking hilarious myself. I am a lover of the absurd and ridiculous, and Hangover hits on all counts.

Oh, thank God, I’m not the only one.
(ahem)

Yah… don’t get the hype, don’t get the adoring fans, don’t get the appeal. No, don’t get me wrong, to each their own and all that, but to me the movie was unfunny, overwrought, derivative and simply un-funny.

I disagree. Superbad is one of the best comedies ever made. The Hangover is nowhere close to being in that league.

This really goes to show how subjective comedy is. I didn’t even crack a smile during Superbad. Didn’t even see how it could be taken as funny. Same with American Pie. *The Hangover *almost sent me into a seizure.

FWIW, had a similar reaction to Pirates of the Carribean. They couldn’t understand why it was supposed to be funny, nor could they comprehend what Johnny Depp was doing most of the time. That’s art, I guess.

Personally, I laughed until I couldn’t breathe. FWIW, I am not the target audience.

Since I started the previous thread on how funny this movie is, I think my position is known.

No sensa humah. Yo guys got no sensa humah.

If I say it was hilarious do I lose my “sophisticated and intelligent” cred?

I got about 2/3’s through it and just gave up. It’s elaborate slapstick. So if your humor runs to the Chevy Chase and Leslie Nielsen genre, you’ll probably like it. I detest slapstick. I think I used to like the 3 stooges when I was in grade school and I’m not sure when I stopped finding it funny, but I definitely don’t any more.

Well, it’s the dumbing down of society. And I’m NOT accusing people who liked this movie of being dumb, but that’s what’s being put out there for them to see, and if that’s labelled “funny movie”, people will see it and laugh. Getting high with friends and watching - funnier!

In the 30’s you had the Marx Brothers, actually witty and droll movies, though that kind of humour wouldn’t register today, too much talking.

It’s like scary movies. It’s hard to find an actual scary movie any more. People cutting their legs off and buckets of gore is just in-your-face stupid, not ‘scary’.

Yeah, I’m an old fart.

I laughed a ton. But I can see it not being for everyone… but nothing funny? “I didn’t know they gave out rings for the holocaust” is at least worth a chuckle, no?
