I literally have no idea what was even supposed to be funny about "The Hangover"

I thought the plot had some problems, but I felt overall it was very funny. The credits are worth watching because they fill in what happened between the rooftop drinking of roofies and the next morning when they wake up. Which would probably make a good sex comedy movie.

I thought it was funny, because in some ways it reminded me of the Three Stooges, or a 1930s-era screwball comedy updated to our era. “Does Caesar actually live here”? Come on. That was definitely funny.

Maybe you have to like slapstick and screwball comedy to enjoy this particular movie.

As an aside, do MDs still look down their noses at dentists as the one in the movie did?

I found it extremely disappointing and not that funny, either, but I do like the David/Seinfeld/AD style of humor.

Actually, I can’t remember the last movie comedy I thought was actually funny. On TV, I enjoy Louie and Community and 30 Rock and The Ricky Gervais show; for stand-up, I like Louis C.K., Arj Barker, Patton Oswalt, Paul F. Tompkins and those types.

Loved it and laughed my ass off in the theater. Have seen it three or four times since, all the way through, and it makes me laugh every time.

I’m a big fan of both Galifianakis and Helms though, and almost anything they do is right up my alley.

No. Frickin’. Clue.

I think the issue was it was trying too hard to be that style of funny movie. I’ve watched it twice now and haven’t even cracked a smile.

Anchorman, on the other hand, is pretty much the same movie and is hilarious.

Exactly the part I was thinking of. Galfanakis wrote that, man! He wrote that for the character!

So many little things that are funny in this movie…

The teacher stealing from his students to fund his Vegas trip.

“The using of the Rogaine…check!”

Inquiring about payphones at the front desk of the hotel (you know…so he can return his pages).

The chicken in the room.

The doctor casually engaging our guys in conversation while he examines his ancient patient.

“Hey, there’s Skittles in there!”

The obscene wedding singer.

Black Doug: “I’ll be your Doug!”

Baby slammed with car door, then… “Are my sunglasses OK?”

The whole missing tooth subplot was great.

The final photo montage was absolutely hysterical.

I am boggled that someone could find this movie unfunny.

Yeah, except that pretty much every one of those movies (except Saving Silverman) was awesome.

Who didn’t think Stu’s song wasn’t funny as shit?!

The movie had a whole bunch of little funny moments too:

“Paging Dr Faggot!”

“It’s not illegal, it’s frowned apon…like masterbating in an airplane…thanks a lot Bin Ladin.”

“Tell that to Rainman…and he was a reTARD.”

“Put your pants on…I find it weird that I have to ask you twice.”

“Here’s your car officers.”

“FINISH HIM!!”

“THIS CRAZY MOTHERFUCKER! I thought he was going to eat my dick!”

“It funny cause he fat!”

“Can I wait outside?”
“I think that’s a good idea.”

The Dan Band
I didn’t realize until now but Mr. Creepy in the elevator / the Gang Bang Guy from Old School is the director.

I’m that person who doesn’t see movies until they appear on Network TV. I’d estimate it’s been about 12-15 years since I went to a theater, and I don’t own a DVD player or VCR. But I was intrigued by the hype about this movie, so I thought what the heck, I’ll rent The Hangover On Demand. I laughed exactly one time (when the guy leaped naked & screaming from the trunk of the car). Sorry, I just didn’t see much that hadn’t been done in some form or another in a billion other mediocre comedies. I’m not saying it’s not a funny movie, because that’s subjective, to some it may well be. For me, not so much. And I want my $5.99 back.

I saw it in the theatre with my best friend before the hype developed, and we both hurt ourselves laughing.

I can see why others wouldn’t like it – especially since I, myself, don’t find most comedy movies to actually be that comedic – but we fucking loved it.

I think I might have chuckled once or twice, but I really can’t remember, I thought that movie was lame, and a quick survey of my immediate cowokers yields a 2/3 negative.

I’m really not trying to persuade anyone to agree with me on this one, but I thought it was hilarious. I have no idea how to explain why I thought it was funny. Just reporting that to me it was.

Is that likely to clarify anything, though, or just give people ammunition with which to say “Well, you’ve got a shitty taste in movies and your opinion on this film is therefore irrelevant”?

Because, personally, I suspect it’s likely to be a case of the latter.

I agree. That’s also why I stated in my post that even though I didn’t find the movie funny, I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s not a funny movie, because it all depends on the taste of the viewer, and maybe even the mood and environment in which you see it. Comedy, like any art, is very subjective.

For what it’s worth, I loved Anchorman and Kung Pow: Enter The Fist and other “Silly” comedies- but, like I said, The Hangover didn’t do anything for me besides provide a few moments of mild amusement. Yet I’ve got plenty of friends, who like others in the thread, laughed so hard they almost sprained something whilst watching it.

I think it’s pretty darn funny. I’ve seen it twice and liked it both times. I think it’s roughly as funny as *Superbad *(though, from that list of movies given upthread, I’d say Role Models is the best.)

I have a pretty broad sense of humor, so there are a lot of movies I find funny. I don’t think The Hangover is one of the funniest movies of all time, or anything (that’d be Ghostbusters), but it’s certainly good for some laughs.

ETA: The only part of the movie I didn’t really found funny (or found less funny) was the naked Chinese gay guy in the trunk. I don’t like it when stereotypes are played up for laughs.

That was the only laugh I had the entire time. But it had nothing to do with his race or sexual orientation. It was all about the shock of a naked screaming guy leaping out of the trunk. I didn’t see it coming, and it cracked me up. shrug

Fifty-seven year old woman weighing in here. I was really annoyed by coworkers quoting the movie all the goddam time, which is usually the kiss of death. But as soon as it came out on DVD, one of them loaned it to me, and Mr. Singular and I loved it! We watch it every time it rolls around on cable. It’s just a fun movie. Sorry, OP.

Cisco, the baby jacking off scene is pretty funny. A big hint that it’s supposed to be funny is that all three of the characters (and probably everybody in the theater) laughed at it.

I don’t remember that scene (been meaning to start this thread for over a year and had a random burst of inspiration the other day). Is it on Youtube?
