I was getting grilled by my girlfriend about where I was last weekend (strippers and gambling). After the shiny light, lack of water, rubber hoses, and truth serum, she was about to put bamboo up my fingernails. I told her it was useless, and I just ripped it off myself.
Actually, she “distracted me” when I was putting a weight away at the gym. How dare she wear something so revealing! My fingernail turned purple and swelled up. I continued to lift because she was freaking out, wanting to go to the emergency room (she’s a nurse). The next day, the swelling went down, but it hurt to grip anything. Two weeks later, I was lifitng, but it had now turned black and purple. Four weeks later, it finally fell off, suprisingly, without any pain.
It looks like there is a nail starting to grow. How long will it take to grow back? Should I keep it bandaged? I keep it bandaged because I don’t want to freak out my co-workers. They were freaked when it was all black and blue. Is there any maintenane or anything else I should be doing?
It’ll take a few to several months to fully grow back. Unless there’s an open wound, or it’s painful to the touch, there’s no need to bandage it. There’s no harm in keeping it bandaged for a short period (as long as you change it regularly), if you feel you must spare others the sight. I’ve lost a thumbnail and a toenail over the years; no problems with either one–although the thumbnail never did grow back correctly.
That is pretty amazing. I have lost mine twice from running in shoes that were too tight and it took about 8 months each time. Do your toenails normally grow that fast?
It’s a perfectly normal runner’s problem. In fact, when I went for a routine physical exam last month, my doctor took one glance down at my toes and said “I see you have runners’ toes!” with a smile on his face.
Of course, it ain’t no fun if you don’t take pictures.
I always take pictures of such important events.
Why, why, why did I have to click those links. I knew I should stop after the first one but there was a kind of morbid curiosity about the rest. Ick.
But I do commend you for both taking the pictures and posting them online. This is what makes the internet great people-- strangers posting photos of gross stuff an’ telling us about it. More threads should have pics.
By the way, minor7flat5… are you a hobbit? 'Cause the hairy toes are quite suspicious and a tell tale sign of, er, hobbit-ness.
Anway, in regards to the OP, I don’t think there’s anything else you should be doing. You might want to keep it bandaged for the first few days or so, if only to help with the weird feeling you’d get if anything touched it.
Though if I lost a nail, the first thing I’d do would be to put it underneath my pillow! =D
