I know right! Stupid inflation. I remember when they used to pay you $.10 to take their ice cream from them back in the 1740s.
I’ve been shopping at ALDI lately. It’s nice to see those 1990s prices again, even if they’re not name brands. The quality is usually pretty damn decent. (The selection sucks, of course.) But that’s a trade-off I’m willing to make.
$.89 for a package of hot dogs
$2.79 for a pound of ground beef (frozen)
$1.00 for a loaf of sandwich wheat bread (or hamburger buns or hot dog buns)
Those are normal prices - sometimes there’s sales!
A couple of weeks ago they had those giant spiral-cut honey hams marked down with a $5.00 discount on top of the already crazy low prices. I picked up an 11 lb. beauty of a ham for only $9.00.
The week before that, I scored a 10 lb bag of Yukon Gold potatoes for $.99.
Shortly after Christmas, they had a special on cornbread stuffing mix - $.25 for a big bag.
I can buy a week’s worth of groceries there for my family of 6 for about $50. Mind you, that’s ground beef and chicken-based dishes 4 nights a week, and hot dogs, mac & cheese, and frozen pizza the other three nights - we’re not getting any steak and lobster, but when money’s tight, every dollar counts.
I haven’t priced the ice cream, but I’m pretty sure they sell it by the gallon there.
a pint of haagen-dazs is about USD12 in Singapore, so that’s about the price of 1-4 meals if you eat out. totally worth it when it goes on sale.
And air. Ice cream is beteen 12% and 50% air so the ice cream you bought may be more accurately $15/gal.
I LOVE ice cream, but the prices are going up (and, I think, the package size has gone down slightly - what seems like a 1/2 gallon is not quite that anymore).
Yesterday I paid over $5 each for two “half-gallons”. We can get them a bit cheaper at WalMart, but we weren’t going to be near there.
My mom goes through ice cream like you would not believe - particularly since she is lactose-intolerant. And diabetic. And does not listen to a word I say. Sigh.
I will pay $4/pint for really good stuff, like Sea Salt & Caramel or Copper Kettle Caramel. But I don’t get it often.
Yeah, what happened to Breyer’s? It used to be really good. It’s bad enough that they raised the price–it’s very disappointing to spend all that money and have it not taste right.
I think it’s the Tara Gum they add now. It’s supposed to make the texture more consistent if the ice cream melts and refreezes. I’m not a fan, at all.
+2 on whatever happened with Breyer’s? I can’t articulate the problem exatly but it has such a weird texture and the flavor’s off.
For ice cream I shop sales and use coupons. People on the west coast of the USA may be fortunate enough to have a local Grocery Outlet that usually has name ice cream brands at deep discounts.
The Kroger quart and up sizes are crappy, but the little cups that are the size of the Ben and Jerry’s are pretty good. Often they’re on sale for a dollar.
I just realized I have a lot of ice cream buying knowledge. Like WhyNot said upthread, “we either have new ice cream or no ice cream!” (Love that!)
Blue Bell still gives the full half gallon. I recommend the Buttered Pecan flavor, but in the pint containers.
Mmm…Blue Bell Coffee Break–dark coffee, light coffee and vanilla coffee. So popular that, when it’s on sale, it sells out very fast.
I only buy the good stuff, and when it’s $2.50 a pint.
My “Farmer’s Foods” grocery store (used to be A&P, then SuperFresh) has about 4 brands of ice cream, and usually 1 or 2 are on sale for $2.50 or $2.99. So I’ll buy one of those brands.
Oh, and the typical size seems to be a half-gallon, but of the brands my local grocer has (Turkey Hill, Stoneridge Creamery, Pet, Bryers) I noticed Pet is the only brand that seems to give you the full half gallon any more.
a pint of Jeni’s Splendid costs $11 around here. I’ve bought several of them
