When does next season air? I see they filmed it in May and June(Wikipedia).
Lately, I’ve found quite a few episodes on youtube. Not sure of the legality, but it has been fun to rewatch some episodes. I wish we had a show like this in the States, but I’m not sure who would be good at it(aside from Craig Ferguson).
Anyone else adore QI? What are your favorite moments? Who are your favorite panelists?
I like David Mitchell, Alan Davies(obviously), Jo Brand, Jimmy Carr, Phil Jupitus, and oddly enough, Clive Anderson.
Rich Hall wasn’t funny when he was an American, and he doesn’t translate well. In addition to your list, I like that Conservative gay guy they have on sometimes.
Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me is roughly comparable. And on the radio, as a proper quiz show should be.
I’ve seen all the seasons thus far on Youtube (because that’s the only way to see it here). Then of course I had to track down clips for all the comedians I hadn’t previously seen. My ultimate favorite panelist has to be Bill Bailey (I adored him in Black Books). He’s going to be in New York in September and I have a ticket! Squee!!
And this is the best QI moment I’ve ever seen. I haven’t laughed that much in a very long time.
It’s great except when Fry tried to explain America as caring more about freedom of speech than justice.
I wish I could watch full shows, though. I hate only getting clips from YouTube. Forever, I thought the whole point of the show was that one round where the common answers are wrong.
Luckily, we have BBC 1 & 2 on cable here, so I programmed my Media Center to pick up any QI XL it can. Despite the XL addendum, it still feels like they cut a lot of pieces from the show to keep it short enough. I wouldn’t mind it being a little longer.
But it helped me find a username for the SDMB.
Rich Hall had me laughing to tears one time, although it’s nice to see a diversity of people participate. It does get a bit of a drag that Alan always finishes last because he always hits the obvious answers.
I think you’re thinking of Have I Got News for You, except Ian Hislop isn’t gay, as far as I’m aware.
Count me in as another QI fan, although I enjoyed the earlier series better, when there was more focus on the facts. These days it’s a bit ‘how many laughs can each contestent get’.
Definitely a great show. The biggest surprise for me was the Scot with the dread lochs. You look at him and make a snap judgement that he’ll suck, but in fact he’s awesome.
Only one I didn’t like was Johnny Vegas. Not terribly funny, too hard to understand, and he talks like he’s got a mouth full of marbles.
David Mitchell is awesome, which got me to look up “That Mitchell and Webb Look”, which is great. That in turn led to “Armstrong and Miller show” which is also pretty damned hilarious.
Hislop is also a political centrist, who seems to prefer the Lib-Dems to any other British political party. This probably puts him to the right of most other British comedians, but far to the left of the American political spectrum.
Could the “conservative gay guy” possibly be Gyles Brandreth? He was actually once a Tory MP and junior minister under Margaret Thatcher. He has certainly done a lot of panel games in his time, including QI (not sure about HIGNFY).
AFAIK neither Hislop nor Brandreth are actually gay: they are, as American comedians say, just British (and British upper class, more to the point). Brandreth, in particular, has a very fruity upper class accent and affected diction (a large part of his comedic schtik) that could easily be mistaken for gay camp. (Also, IMHO, Brandreth is way funnier than Hislop, although perhaps that is just because I don’t really find Hislop funny at all.)
Such an amazing show. I especially love Alan Davies, David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr, and Rob Brydon. And if people haven’t seen the Film episode with Emma Thompson, check that out RIGHT. NOW.
