I love the purple hair

Last week my friend/ex-fiancée and I were in Fred Meyer. As we entered one aisle, a woman and her little daughter were exiting. I couldn’t help noticing their hair. Mom’s was bright orange, and the little girl’s (she looked about five) was dark purple. I said I love the purple hair. It’s almost the colour of my Jeep, and my first motorcycle was dark purple. Mom and daughter beamed. I guess they liked it too. Mom was covered with tattoos, and I pointed out one on mom’s left upper arm. ‘Oh, and you’ve got Lenore!’ Mom looked a little stunned. ‘You know Lenore?’ ‘Yeah! The cute little dead girl!’ She said she had to tell people who Lenore is, so I suppose she was surprised that a Fat Boring Old Fart would identify the character. I’m barely Gen-X. On the ragged edge of the cusp, really. Not one would really expect to read Lenore or Johnny The Homicidal Maniac.

We wished each other a good day, and my friend and I agreed that they made a good family unit.

Dark purple hair is amazing. I used to have some, and it was a huge pain in the ass. I had to bleach my hair, then dye it, which was very messy, and I couldn’t wash the purple with shampoo, only rinse it (I just had a wide streak), and it faded out to pale lavendar (not a pretty shade, though) in about two weeks. Then I had to repeat the whole process, minus the bleaching. I loved it, though, but couldn’t keep it up, so I only had it for about 8 months. I miss it.

Honestly, I would be ok with dying my child’s hair if they asked for it themself, if their hair was light enough that it didn’t have to be bleached, and if their school permitted it (or they could just have it in the summer).

I had dark purple hair for a while; it really is awesome. I went to a private girls’ school and only four teachers commented; saying they liked it!

Reminds me of the time I was in Tower Records. The clerk who took my $$ had a bunch of tattoos. I looked and said, “Oh, you’ve got Vampira!” He was surprised and pleased to know that I could distinguish Vampira from Morticia Addams.

My daughter just got out of school for the summer, and we’ve already purchased a bleach kit and pink dye. We’re doing the bottom inch of her hair bright pink for the summer, and when school starts back we’ll just trim it out. She’s eight.

I had my hair aubergine (eggplant) for a few years. I loved it.
I did have second thoughts once when the guy I was dating saw it in the bright sunlight and said “Wow your hair is really purple!” Then threw up on my shoe.
I kept the hair, dumped the guy. (He gave me many many more reasons.)

Last month I wondered out loud if I should dye my hair electric blue. My boss suggested that would not be a good idea. Killjoy!

There’s a small thrift shop that I donate to occasionally that has a granny-type working behind the counter. Despite the fact that she could be anywhere between 65 and 85, she loves the punk hairdos. Last time I was in, she was sporting something like a mohawk dyed green.

Go, Granny, go!

I’m also in a line of work where it wouldn’t be acceptable for me to do anything funky with my hair. :frowning:
Seems silly to me that some people are so afraid of unnatural hair colors. It’s not like it hurts anyone if I feel like having bright pink hair.
