This is old news now, but one of the greatest bands ever, Ben Folds Five, broke up last week… I never got to see them live. Sure, Ben is still going to do solo stuff, but it just won’t be the same. I mean, one of the most powerful songs they did was “Magic,” which was written by Darren Jesse…
On the first night I spent in SF when I moved out here, BFF were playing at the Warfield. However, after driving in from Nevada, I was too tired to drag myself down there, rationalizing, “Eh, I’ll catch 'em the next time around.”
So much for that plan.
I’d heard that the band members are all living in different parts of the world now, and it was just too difficult to get together. So we can blame Ben’s Australian wife, ala Yoko Ono.
This was one of those quietly excellent bands that seem to fly almost under the radar of popular culture. I suppose we can console ourselves that we still have the likes of Enrique Iglesias and N’Sync, huh?
<sigh> Yeah, I just heard today, and was actually on my way to post something about it when I saw this.
BFF was definitely my favorite band ever. Their music defined my life as no other music could, and I never even got to see them in concert. As a plus, they gave me someone to look up to as a piano player, and to aspire to play like.
Ah well, one can only hope that Ben’s solo stuff will be up to par. I’m gonna go cry now.
Actually, it’s just Ben Folds backing up, doing all the instruments, except for Willie’s vocals.
In a way, though, I’m kind of happy that they broke up in their prime, instead of just hanging around till nobody liked them. Then again, one more tour would have been nice…
C’mon, everybody, don’t let this thread die, this band was too good to forget about.
Ben has been, musically, probably the most influencial artist for me for the past 3 years… It’s such a shame I never got too experience the whole band live.
To me, Ben is the perfect songwriter. He knows how to write a song so that, no matter who you are, it’s about YOU - But still personal to him.
The saddest part of all is that such powerful collaborations as “You’re the Magic that Holds the Sky Up From The Ground” will never happen again… Since the day I first heard that song, I can’t hear it without crying. And “Mess”??? Oh my GOD that has ME written all over it… You too, I’m sure.
And the first album would make a perfect sound track to a really good feel-good movie…
I always wanted to direct a movie and have Ben do the soundtrack… Guess I still could… Just won’t be the same without Darren and Sledge…
