I´ve been browsing around these boards for quite a while and it´s been really interesting to see all the stuff that´s being talked about. I just had to register so I could put in my 2 cents from time to time. A little about me: even though I´m 18, I still have two years of school left. That´s because I spent one year doing 12th grade in the US and I have to do it over again here. And 13th grade is coming up, too ;(
I live in southwestern Germany, one of the bigger cities here is Freiburg and Strasbourg, France is even closer. I spend a lot of time on the web (yeah I guess too much sometimes), I mostly listen to Alternative and Classic Rock (some of my favs are Oasis, Travis, The Who, Stone Roses, Vai, Satriani…), do some webdesign here and there, play hoops, read stuff (I´m an infoaddict) and I just started to learn Japanese. I had French, English and Spanish for several years in school.
So maybe one of you has been down here in Germany or we share some interests?
Now this is what I call a messageboard. I just popped in a new CD and refreshed the thread - there´s a reply.
Well jarbaby, Leipzig isn´t exactly around the corner from here. What do you mean with artifacts? If you mean delicious German food I would be in for an exchange with the occasional American food I dig
Hi, Matt! Welcome. Because more is better here. Is it true that Europeans are hanging American flags all over? Germany is beautiful. I enjoyed the scenery on a train ride along the Rhine.
Willkommen MattK! Where are you exactly im Ländle? I used to live in Tübingen, myself.
And jarbabyj: since I do in fact live in Leipzig, what exactly would you like to have? We’ve got nice little marzipan pastries here but not too many local kinky magazines, sorry…
Guten Tag, mattk! Ich möchte nach Deutschland reisen, wenn ich alter (ich bin nur 15) bin. Wohin soll ich gehen? Schon habe ich Berlin, München und Hamburg gewählt; kannst du mehr Städte empfehlen?
[sub](psst! How’d I do? Believe me, it gets worse after this…)[/sub]
First and most important, welcome aboard, MattK! We’re glad you’re here. (It’s about time you stopped lurking! We WERE wondering about that strange young man hiding behind the potted plants.) Have a blast!
We have different forums for different kinds of discussions, i.e. Cafe Society for arty stuff, etc. The descriptions are on the first page of the message board. It’s just a matter of putting discussions where interested folks would most likely look for them. I’m moving your thread to MPSIMS because that’s where you’ll most likely be greeted, kidded, flirted with, hassled–the usual stuff.
That explains THAT! I thought you were just checking in from vacation or a business trip.
We really need more rules about handles.
It’s hard to imagine NICE marzipan, since the stuff around here is usually formed into fruit shapes and several years old. I’ll have to take your word for it.
Welcome, MattK. [sub] Your english is really good.[/sub]
My inlaws are from (grab your map) Schneverdingen. Ja, I know, You’ve never heard of it. South of Hamburg. East of Bremen. One word and you will know the area: Luneburger Heide ( ok, two words.) Not much there. It’s known for it’s sheep. Which doesn’t say alot for the local girls…baaaaaaa…
Have a great time here. How did you find us, anyways?
Violet: Yes, some people do. Like my brother, he has two huge flags, one on his ceiling and the other one on the wall. It´s mostly people that like traveling to the US I think.
Crusoe: I thought once you picked your screenname, you can´t change it?
Quasimodem: Cool, that´s quite a long time, so I guess you go visit your relatives from time to time?
TheThill: The town is Neuried, the only thing it might be known for is that it´s Germany´s #2 tobacco-raising town. The city I go to school is Offenburg.
Redukter: Well the south in general is quite nice, I don´t know if you´ll be able to choose your region. I couldn´t when I went to the US…
Herzlich Willkommen auf dem Straight Dope!
Mein Vater war des Brasilien und seine Opa war des Hamburgs.
It is probably painfully obvious I am still learning German. In one sentence I usually make 3 case errors and 5 tense errors. At least I understand when I see it written or hear it spoken…except when the Swabian accent is used…
Ja, ich habe a few years on Dich, Junge, und Du hast right, Ich visite meine People zwei times im Jahr.
So hey, how do y’all like my mixed German/English, huh? I speak it fluently, but writing it like this saves me from writing in German and then translating the whole thing again to English so y’all can read it. Saves bandwidth too!
Shirley: Thanks, I did graduate from highschool and I lived in a family for 10 months, so I had some practice I dunno exactly how I found the board, probably when I was looking for urban legend pages.
Saudade: Yeah grammar is always a pain, especially in German. You´d say “aus Brasilien”
Not picking on you. Just showing correction. My german is zehr kaput. No, it’s tot. Ja, das ist it. Meine deutsch ist tot. I have a headache ( kaufschmirtz?) now just thinking in german.
It’s “Kopfschmerzen”, but yours was pretty cute. I have a website I go to, to keep in practice if you would like to “revive” your totes Deutsch somewhat, I can send it to you.
Hope you didn’t mind me having a little fun with your word, it wasn’t meant to be critical.
