I moved from GA to OH in July--how do I file state taxes?

I’m probably not going to owe any taxes because I’m a student and my income was about $7000 for the whole year, but I need to file and I’m not sure how the state thing goes when you’ve lived in two states during one year… help?

I don’t know about Ohio, but you will have to file a form with Georgia for the time you lived there, assuming you made enough during that time to require filing. When I moved from California to Georgia back in 1993, I had to file returns with both states; of course, I was making somewhat more than $7K at the time.

Tax software would probably be a good investment for this situation.

Turbotax will walk you through multi-state income tax pretty well.

Exactly. Buy Turbotax and just answer the questions.

And the nice thing with Turbotax as opposed to a Live Human Tax Preparer Guy is that you can yell and scream at Turbotax and call it a G***** M****** C***** and Turbotax will just sit there and take it.

But seriously, for TurboTax, don’t you have to buy each state package separately? Meaning that the OP would need to buy both state packages? I suppose Turbotax will just tell her that once she’s done filling out the federal taxes.

You can stop by your public library, and get copies of the Georgia and Ohio forms for both full-year residents and part-year residents. Those forms will have instruction books that will tell you what to do, at no cost except photocopying.

Whether you have to file probably depends on how long during 2007 you lived in each state.

I think I will do the TurboTax online thing… hopefully it will work. Thanks for the tips.

TurboTax is your friend. I moved from VA to PA back in May, and it handled the multi-state filing with no problems.

I do my son’s tax returns. He’s a grad student at the Univ of Georgia. I also use Turbotax.

This year I had to file returns for him for both Wisconsin and Georgia. Included with the Turbotax purchase was one state – I chose Wisconsin, where I also have to file the family return. But getting capability for Georgia would’ve cost me another $35 or so.

Instead, I simply went online to get the Georgia state forms (2007 State Tax Forms). Downloaded them and filled them out the old fashioned way – paper and pen.

I don’t know if Turbotax online provides the capability of filing in multiple states without additional cost. But the version you buy in the store and load onto your PC only includes one state.

I used TurboTax online and it handled it fine in figuring stuff out. It said that I neither owe tax nor am due a refund in either state*. It said that Ohio doesn’t require you to file if you don’t owe, but it didn’t say anything about Georgia. Anybody know if I have to? I’d rather not go through the trouble if it isn’t mandatory.

*(I am a full time student and live off of student loans.)

My son had to file a Georgia state return even though he is not a permanent resident of Georgia. But he did get income subject to Georgia taxes, so his situation is different from yours Opal. I don’t know if you’re officially a Georgia resident still, or whether you’ve established residency in Ohio. Here are the Georgia rules, from here.

I did TurboTax’s free online version this time. I did have to pay ten dollars for the second state, but I had to file in Maryland and Idaho. It was really easy and painless. I would make sure you really need to file in both first, though. I didn’t strictly have to but I wanted every penny back I could get from both.

Never mind.

Yeah that was the point of my last post: I don’t have to file in Ohio, according to Turbo Tax, but it doesn’t say if I have to file in Georgia or not. I don’t owe in either state. So that’s the information I’m looking for. Is it mandatory to file in Georgia or not.

I’m not sure whether I was “required” to file federal or not this year. I mean, I don’t owe any tax, and I’m due a refund… but I have no idea if I HAD to file or not. That’s the only one on there that would make me fall into the “have to file in Georgia” category that I can tell.
