I moved the laptop to make a point but was it right?

They would waited until I walked away with the laptop. Or…well…I hope so… I really don’t wanna get anally searched because I wanted to play some fun.

This whole phrase shoudln’t bethere as I got no enjoyment out of the situation and I wasn’t playing fun. I didn’t reread my post before I hit submit :smack:

Don’t worry about it. We have your prints on file now…

I just wanted to point out what an excellent post this is. Kudos to you, Surbey, for listening to what other people are saying (even though they don’t agree with you) and thinking about what to do better in the future.

Right.

Heck, I knew that. In casee you didn’t notice, I posted to that particular thread quite frequently.

We just likes to ribs Hal, that’s all.

If I were to do something with the intent of frightening someone, I would have stayed to see her reaction. What’s the point of not sticking around to see if you accomplished your goal?

As far as whether you were in the “right”… If someone did that to me, I would be initially angry (not violently so, just an “Oh, shit!” type of feeling). I would get the message, though, and perhaps be appreciative that the laptop wasn’t stolen. It probably wouldn’t stop me from leaving it lying around unattended the next time. Yep, I’m stubborn/stoopid like that.

LunaV, I couldn’t have said it better. Private property is exactly that, Private.

I would have done the same thing as the OP, with the exception that I would have stayed around until she came back. Both to see her reaction, and to let her know where it was if she was too panicked to figure out the cord to plug thing.

And she’s not an adult (okay, maybe she’s eighteen, but in my day adults were 21) she’s a naive student. She’s there to learn, and if she can learn this particular lesson fairly painlessly, then all that money she’s paying for her education is worth it.

I do something similar in grocery stores when I find a cart with a purse sitting in it, and the owner nowhere nearby…I stand there and wait, and if no one appears in a few seconds, I call out…who’s red purse is this in this cart? and then when the owner returns, I let her know that I kept an eye on it for her, but I could have just as easily walked out of the store with it before she returned, and then I walk away. I’ve had my purse stolen before, and believe me, getting all that stuff replaced isn’t as easy as you might think. And it’s expensive, and at the time I only had $3.17 to my name. Try to replace your driver’s license for that, or get new keys made for your house/car/office, or even replace your library cards. Sometimes people get forgetful about their security, and a little reminder would be welcomed, even if they react nastily.

My purse was stolen from the back room at work…our coat hooks are easily seen from the open backroom door. Now we hang our purses behind the bathroom door, where they can’t be seen and quickly grabbed. But when one of us forgets, and leaves it sitting open on the floor right inside the backroom, or worse, on the counter by the register, we just pick t up and hang it behind the door, and then tell the other person so they don’t panic. And we are always grateful for the reminder, because it’s easy to get sloppy about theses things, and if the store keys get stolen, we all have to go through the inconvenience of getting the store re-keyed and new copies made.
