Many people there did not like the name.
This is MPSIMS.
Say whatever you like.
Yes, Fitzwilliam is his first name, but was his mother’s last name.
My cousin has a son whose first name is her maiden name. My husband has a cousin who has a family name as a first name. It isn’t uncommon, but a lot of purists would say it should be your own family name in order to use it as a first name, not the family name of a fictional book character.
But, they are your kids, name ‘em what you want. We considered "punkinhead’ but decided it wouldn’t age well.
I’m not fond of Darcy as a boys name, but suspect that its more cultural than anything - names ending in long e’s for boys are rather diminuative in the U.S. and have that “not aging well” problem. Apparantly, that’s less of an issue in Australia. Besides, I’m a huge P&P fan, but like most Austen heros, Darcy was a stiff.
And yet again, I suddenly find Americans saying, “Hey, that’s a GIRLS’ name!”
It happened to me. First name Andrew, but called Drew by family. Always been a strong, traditional male name until that Drew whatshername teenflick person came along. Well bugger that, I was here first!
And now Darcy! First I’ve heard of it.
The average Darcy, in my experience, will be a working class man of about retiring age. A big guy, heavily wrinkled from years of whisky and tobacco, but a full head of grey hair, still as strong as an ox, and with hands the size of steaks which, at close to seventy, he’d still be able to throttle you with if you told him he had a girls’ name.
Anyway, it’s a fantastic name for a little boy. I like the old-fashioned ones, although most people doing the “let’s chose an old-fashioned name” thing don’t get very creative and stick with things like “Jack”.
Great choice and congratulations!! I love the name.
Oh, throttling me is not a very impressive feat.
I like it, and I haven’t even read P&P! It’s different, but in my mind works much better as a boy’s name than for a girl, so not too unusual. Good choice, IMHO!
I’ve heard it used twice in the last six months for newly born children - BOTH girls.
squeeeeeeeee!(a very soft squee so’s not to wake the baby, of course.)
What a handsome fellow! And a hot mama (?), if you don’t mind me saying so. She looks fantastic!
I only know one Darcy, he’s a guy - about 38 years old However, for some STRANGE reason, his parents named him D’Arcy.
I don’t get it - their other kids’ normal names are spelled normally …
D’arcy’s a common alternate form, I’m fairly certain. Closer to the original surname I imagine.
I personally like the name. It sounds classy as a male name, but I could see why someone may think it’s effeminate. I personally don’t think so, and for me brings to mind a handsome, well-groomed man.
I knew a guy who named his kid D’arcy. He said D’arcy’s first word was ‘apostrophe’.
I thought you might have been a John Denver fan. Although he didn’t write it, “Darcy Farrow” was one of his best recordings and tremendously popular in concert.
He can always go by Dar later if he wants.
I once had a bunny named D’Arcy.
What an adorable little man he is, blinkingblinking. That is an impressive head of hair! Congratulations to you and your wife.
So how is little Darce doing? He looks adorable.
Is that a common name in Austrailia for boys (or girls)? The only Darcy I can remember is someone I knew in the 80’s - same as a previous poster. I know here in the USA, the other kids would pick on a boy named Darcy. As I’m not familiar with names in Australia I don’t know if it would be a problem for your son at all.
Cute kid.
Congrats!
The overwhelming majority of Drews in the U.S. are males.
He’s an adorable baby! Mazel Tov!
