I named my baby 'Darcy'

I thought through this for about 5 months. My wife and family are very happy with the name. Everyone I tell thinks it is a nice name.
My baby boy seems happy with the name too.
The name came to me from ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

So you can think of Colin Firth whenever you call the child? :stuck_out_tongue: Can’t say as I blame ya.

Well, I read the book twice and saw the 1940 movie well before the TV series. The 2005 movie was also pretty good.
So, in answer to your question, no.

As long as your last name isn’t Marcy!

No. My last name begins with M. Does not rhyme with Darcy
I studied all the name abbreviations too. My baby’s initials are DM

I love it.

If young Mr. Darcy were to run willy nilly through our school and I could hear you shout after him, I would know that his name came from P & P.
Love it.

My sisters’ names are Darcy and Coral.

This thread sort of confuses me. I’m wondering what you expect. Do you simply want everyone to come in and say “What a nice name?” Or do you really want someone to say, “How could you name your kid that?!” If you simply want to spread your joy concerning your new child, why focus on the name?

Congrats on your child, and I’m glad you like the name you’ve chosen.

The only Darcy I know personally is a female german shepherd.

I don’t know any Darcys. Congrats on the baby. Do you have any pictures?

Well, I’d be worried if he said he hated it.

I know a Darcy (her sister is named Delaney), and she’s a delightful person, so that’s who I think of when I hear the name Darcy. I like it.

Um, you seem to have left the cute baby pictures out of your cute baby thread. Please rectify this at your earliest convenience to avoid the wrath of the MPSIMSers!

I find this fascinating. It’s very common for standard boys’ names to become girls’ names. It’s very uncommon for the trend to go the other way, or even for names that were apropriated for the female gender to swing back to male. This makes me wonder if we are seeing the start of a trend with the name Darcy. Popular movies and literature do have an effect on names.

congratulations on your little boy.

Darcy for a boy in the last 40 years (based on popularity - 1 to 1000):

After 1970, it was not in the 1000 most popular names for boys.
Quite a different sitch for girls:

Congratulations on your little guy!

I can’t say that I, as a dude, would be wild about being named Darcy. But what do I know about name popularity in Australia?

blinkingblinking’s previous thread asked for advice on baby names.

I’m sure that someone will post a link, eventually.

Wasn’t Darcy his last name?

The only Darcy I have known was a girl I knew in highschool in the 80’s.

I don’t personally like it as a boy’s first name, but if you’re happy with it, I’m happy for you.

Rhiannon - Yes, his name was (I believe) Fitzwillliam Darcy.

StG

Though Fitzwilliam was his mother’s maiden name - Fitzwilliam Darcy had two last names and no first name (not necessarily uncommon in this day and age either).

(I’m reminded of a “not without my handbag” comment on a woman who wanted to name her child Willoughby…something to the extent that a) Willoughby was his LAST name (his first name was John), and that b) in case she missed it, he’s the VILLIAN in Sense and Sensability.

Dangerosa - When his given name is Fitzwilliam, even though it’s a family name, wouldn’t that be his first name? It’s an old Southern tradition, for example, to give a child the mother’s maiden name as a middle name. In fact, although we aren’t southern, my brother carries my mother’s maiden name as his middle name.

And someone really wanted to name their child after that dastardly Willoughby, despoiler of virgins? You might as well name him Snidely Whiplash!
