These names fall under “E) Other” (viz., lack of information) rather than “C) Thought a generic name was cute”. A complicating factor in the case of the budgie was my (then) four-year-old nephew, who saw us bringing home a new budgie a few months after our previous one had died, and started yelling, “Chippy! Chippy! Chippy!” (my wife liked that idea better than my suggestion of “Downy”, too).
“I don’t just want you to feel envy. I want you to suffer, I want you to bleed, I want you to die a little bit each day. And I want you to thank me for it.” – What “Let’s just be friends” really means
Other. It was football season when we got Boomer, and we kicked around (oooh, a pun) football names till we found one that sounded good with doggie commands.
I’m inclined to say “E” (other) but will let you be the judge.
When we went to pick our dog up, we looked through a map if the city on the way to the breeder. We found street names that we thought sounded good for a pet name.
We settled on “Murphy.” It has no special meaning to us.
I’m not sure if this qualifies as “C” (generic and cute) or “D” (which you say includes “long story”). I think it is firmly within “E” though.
TIME ELAPSED SINCE I QUIT SMOKING:
One week, 18 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds.
310 cigarettes not smoked, saving $38.87.
Life saved: 1 day, 1 hour, 50 minutes.
2 cats, probably E but actually intended to be descriptive: Gold and Silver. Although Cornbread and Biscuit would have been more accurate. Occasionally they get called other names that I won’t mention here.
I’ve got 3 dogs and 8 cats…do I count for 11 by myself??? Mostly I’d be an “other”. the names just come to me after I’ve been around the animal awhile. But I have several inside jokes, like my cat named Phydeau (Fido). Another cat named Polly, she has extra toes, which is polydactyl. Oh, and Snowballs…we got him as a neutered male. He’s all white and he got s-noballs, get it? Anyhow 3 joke nems and the rest are “others”.
Almost exclusively B for all my pets, past and present. The only exception I can think of is Keekee the cat who got the name because it was how my nephew said kitty, so what is that a D or an E?
All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people.
D and B. We inherited our Siberian husky from a relative, who had named him Merlot because that was the wine they had for dinner the night they got him. (Hence, D) We thought that it was dumb to name a dog after a wine, so we changed it to Merlin (Hence, B).
Cat one, living with my parents now, is a B: named Zem after the mattresses in The Hitchhiker’s Guide books. Cat two, living with me at the moment, is an E: named Marlin by the shelter people. It fit him, so I kept it.
Good luck with the class!
Gamera is really neat, he is full of turtle meat, we’ve been eating Gam-er-aaaa…
I just got a kitten yesterday actually. I’m still not decided on his name yet. It’s tentatively “Under”. He’s completely black, and very active and curious.
His sister, who my friend took home is named “Frankie” after Frank Sinatra, because of her blue eyes.
So that’s two people. I guess you count us as both E, or maybe E and D.
I’m going to go start a “Name my Kitten” thread now.
