I need a large, aluminum... disc.

Or tabletop. Or something.

My latest project was a firepit in the back yard. We tend to have a lot of people over for firepit parties, so it’s pretty big. It’s about 2.5 feet high, circular, and about 80" in diameter. I’d like to cover it when we’re not using it. Sure, I could use a tarp, but I’d have to let the thing completely cool before I could use that, and I don’t much care for the look, either.

So I’m trying to find a metal cover. If I’d made the firepit small, say, 36", I wouldn’t have a problem. But because it’s so large, I’m at a loss.

I’m looking for a round metal disc about 80" in diameter. An aluminum tabletop would work pretty well, except I can’t find one the size I need. I’d have one fabricated, but I have no idea where to even start for that.

Any ideas?

Presumably a machine shop would make something like that. No idea how much they’d charge you though.

Currogated roof panels? Bolt two together and cut a disc out with a reciprocating saw.

Go to a sheet metal shop and ask them to fabricate you a conical lid with a radius of 40" with at least 26 gauge galvanized steel.

Try an HVAC supplier. I used to have just what you needed, one of those big domes that cover roof top ventilation fans. The HVAC places that fabricate ducts and vents may be able to fabricate something out of thin steel or aluminum that would cost less than a dome.

Choose… wisely. There may be issues with putting a lid like that over a still-hot pit, which will certainly happen from time to time. Light-gauge aluminum or steel might warp badly.

I’d look at a fabricated frame with sheet metal formed over it. Don’t forget to put four handles on it to make it easy to manage.

also add some weight to the rim. a light weight lid will become air borne.
