I’m enjoying Justified. It 's technically a cop show, but it’s got a Western feel to it, with just the right amount of humor in there as well. I don’t know if it will develop into a great show, but it’s very enjoyable.
I’ll second Community. There’s no laugh track and it has an unconventional premise about an assholish lawyer who got sent back to community college because his undergraduate degree was fake. The cast is amazing and while the storylines aren’t very explicit, they do seem to be willing to push the boundaries regarding nakedness. It’s not available on DVD yet (the first season is still underway), but you might be able to catch one or two episodes at Hulu.
My three are all on Hulu (along with many of the other recommendations), you can watch an episode right now to see if it’s your cup of tea.
I would suggest united states of tara, on swhowtime.
That’s pretty much what “Torchwood” is for.
Denis Leary’s “Rescue Me”.
I think you may be pleasantly surprised by Nurse Jackie. It’a not a traditional doctor drama, really.
You could superficially compare it to House, in that it’s about a medical professional with a serious opiate addiction - but it’s not as episodic or formulaic, and there isn’t really a “patient of the week” or anything like that.
If you liked The Sopranos, you may enjoy seeing alternate-universe Carm and Horny-Father-Whatsit who’s now a pharmacist with an iffy sense of propriety have a more complicated affair. (With some over-the-top sex scenes, since it’s Showcase.)
Edie Falco kicks five different kinds of ass in this series.
The Middleman! You HAVE to watch it.
It’s low budget TV show that has a real comic book feel to it. The show is about a super hero type character, The Middleman, and his apprentice who go protect the world from evil villains. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously and it is packed with joked and pop culture references.
No one has mentioned Freaks and Geeks yet. That’s another MUST watch.
Unlikely, given that Netflix is only 9 dollars a month and their online content that’s available via their “Instant Watch” feature is huge, with a lot of seasons of many, many TV shows recently added…and you can stream their instant play content through a router to your Wii, PS3 or XBox 360 to your HDTV if you don’t want to watch it on your computer (and you can watch these shows and movies on ANY computer ANYWHERE with high-speed internet just by logging into your account)…
…not to mention their DVD by mail service, which has most of the newest titles they have available and has an incredibly fast turnaround rate. I put DVD in mail on Monday, I get next DVD on list on Wednesday…no postage charge, either. Or get one DVD and keep it for two months…no late fees, ever…
I can stress enough how cool it is…and its cheap.
I vote for Rescue Me.
Breaking Bad
Friday Night Lights
Rescue Me
Justified
I’m in the process of hunting down Archer, Posh Nosh, Lunch Monkeys, and the Ricky Gervais cartoon. I’m having some trouble finding Trailer Park Boys as well as the original V miniseries and movie.
I’m considering Deadwood and Carnivale for the next round.
I already have Freaks and Geeks on DVD. One of my favorite short-lived shows was Grosse Pointe (not the John Cusack movie Grosse Pointe Blank). Unfortunately that one seems to be hard to find.
Rescue Me and Breaking Bad… not in that order.
Oops, I confused Psych with Head Case. It’s the latter one I’ve ssen.
I’ve become hooked on Archer, Posh Nosh, Lunch Monkeys, Community, and Modern Family. The other suggestions made in this thread are still under consideration! Thanks!
Sons of Anarchy
Also coming back this week is Royal Pains, which I think is definitely worth checking out. Another one of those amazing USA shows - good cast and has comedy mixed with drama. Premieres the night of June 3rd along with another awesome show, Burn Notice, great for openings in your summer schedule.
What’s Royal Pains about?
I just signed up on your rec, Foie. I was using Graboid (anyone else here do so?) but I found that while they do tend to upload quickly (I can see my Breaking Bad eps the same night), the downloads of movies don’t often work and/or they just don’t have what I want to see (especially in the documentary area). I’m psyched about Netflix. I had them years ago for just DVDs but I really wanted something that will stream onto the computer.
Thanks for the rec.
Of the suggestions offered kindly in this thread, I have or am currently enjoying:
Archer
Trailer Park Boys
Posh Nosh
The Middleman - Natalie Morales is like Amanda Peet, only better!
On my back burner are:
V
Status (other):
I’ve seen an episode of Peep Show – I think it was the first episode of the most recent season – and I’m not yet sure whether I’m going to watch any more. It hasn’t hooked me.
Don’t feel left out if your suggestion isn’t listed. Some of the suggestions were already among my favourites, like Dead Like Me, Freaks and Geeks, Community, and Twin Peaks.
