I want to make a playlist consisting entirely of music featuring the accordion and bagpipes, don’t ask me why. I don’t particularly care about genre, it just needs accordion and/or bagpipes. It would be nice if it was available for legal download because my friend has kindly let me hijack her credit card but if not, tell me anyway and I’ll keep it in mind.
So far I have:
Accordion
The Mariner’s Revenge Song - The Decemberists
The Log Driver’s Waltz - Traditional
Tu Es Foutu - In-Grid (if it is indeed accordion…)
For a bagpipe extravaganza, try the Braveheart soundtrack. Some really nice stuff on there.
Not too sure about accordions, but I do recall some sort of collaboration between Yo-Yo Ma and Astor Piazzolla that featured the latter on the bandoneón. Hang on.
Coincidentally, just now the song going through my head was “Talking to My Angel” by Melissa Etheridge, which has a neat accordion part played by James Fearnley of the Pogues. It comes in after the last chorus and rides the song out. As its melody slowly rises, it reminds me of an airplane taking off. It’s quite simple, but it fits the song like a glove.
I sold my soul for freedom
It’s lonely but it’s sweet
Incidentally, I should add a disclaimer that all of those are very, very annoying. If you approached the OP from the standpoint of ENJOYING bagpipe music, I’d recommend something more along the line of the Rogues of Scotland or something.
John Kitrkpatrick is one of the best accordion players of all time (In the English folk tradition).
Also English folk - Simon Care. See if you can find anything by his band ‘Tickled Pink’. Recommended track; **‘Need for Speed’ ** - a ten-minute progressive rock - style improvisation based on the trad folk dance tune ‘Speed the Plough’.
Bagpipes - *Kathryn Tickell * plays Northumbrian pipes either solo or with her band *‘Ensemble Mysticale’ * (iirc). Check out her solo on Oysterband’s ‘Lost and Found’ as well.
Alun Stivell plays Scottish bagpipes and bombarde (breton bagpipes).
Irish pipes don’t really count as they’re powered by a bellows, so *Paddy Moloney * and Davey Spillaine are out.
One of the best accordian/concertina players (at least in Irish Music) is John Williams (no, not the soundtrack composer!). He has a couple albums available at iTunes:
“Steam” John Williams, released 2001
and
“Raven” Dean Magraw & John Williams, released 2006
All by Gaelic Storm: Stain the Grout (Album: How Are We Getting Home?) Cab Ride to Kingston* (Album: How Are We Getting Home?) Schooner Lake Set (Album: Special Reserve) Nancy Whiskey** (Album: Special Reserve)
*: Not available on iTunes
**: Features Deger electric pipes and words
