I need some advice from someone who has been to Isla Roatan, Honduras.

In about a week and a half, I am traveling to Roatan to meet a cruise ship. The ship leaves from Galveston and Roatan is its first port-of-call. Because of work, I can’t join them until midway through the week-long cruise, so it’s off to Roatan for me. I have made the airline reservations, purchased the tickets, and arranged for every bit of the trip except the last mile.

I am arriving at Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (RTB/MHRO) in the mid-afternoon. I need to get from the airport to Mahogany Bay. Will there be taxi cabs readily available at this little airport with the big name? What flavor of money will these cab drivers be expecting? Will good ol’ American dollars work, or would it be better if I got something else?

Thanks.

You might find your answer here: Roatan Island Tourist Tips Taxi Fares

I am guessing $10 or $15 USD.

I can confirm that US dollars work, and they’ll go far. We asked a taxi driver if he could act as our personal driver for the day on the island, and he quoted us something like $15. We tipped very generously.

Thank you for the link. Given that it is January and not the busy season (I’m assuming), I hope that there will be taxis at the airport.

The SDMB is awesome.
