I recently started reading works by Colette, the French authoress who wrote in the early 20th century. So far, I’ve only read a few short stories, and I love her work. I’d like to read some of her novels, not only in English, but in French, because I need to practice reading French.
Does anyone else here read her books? What are a couple of her better novels?
I’m a huge fan of Cheri, and then, Last of Cheri. Last of isn’t really that great of a book, but it’s usually right there in the volume with Cheri, so how can you pass that up?
Some people think that the Claudine novels are the ultimate in Colette, but for me, I find them better in short doses. It’s a deliberate take off on girls’ school and romance stories, so Claudine’s antics are very episodic and read almost like short stories, especially the early ones. I think the latter ones are better, but probably wouldn’t have the same impact if you haven’t read the early ones.
