I need to read.

I can’t tell you when the was the last time I read a book from beginning to end. It’s embarassing to admit or even think about.

Please suggest a book and or books in the following categories:

Nothing Scary (I like my sleep)
No self help books

I like:
Mystery
Drama
Sex
Love Stories
Murder
True stories
Not so true stories

I know I am forgetting some. I need to get away from this computer and start reading again. I have no clue where to start though, so I need your help.

I’m not a big mystery reader, but I found I really enjoyed Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone novels, otherwise known as the “Alphabet Mysteries.” She started with “A is for Alibi” and is up to “P is for Peril”, so that should keep you busy for a while.

True stories–the two best non-fiction books I’ve read in the last few years were both by Jon Krakauer: “Into Thin Air” and “Into the Wild.” The first is the true story of an expedition to climb Mt. Everest that went very, very bad; the 2nd is a character story of a young hiker found dead in the Alaskan wilderness, and what drove him there. ITA got a lot of press, but ITW is a riveting book if you want to understand the mind of the extreme outdoorsman.

Try the Anita Blake: Vampire Killer series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Lots of sex (especially in her most recent offering, "Narcissus in Chains), lots of murders, and lots of suspense. The body count generally kicks off on page 3 and rises steadily from there. I wouldn’t classify them as horror; they are set in modern day St. Louis, and vampires, wereanimals, zombies, etc., are just a part of life. The vampires have even lobbied for and been granted civil rights. And then of course there’s the ongoing love triangle between Anita, the Master Vampire of the city (Jean-Claude), and the Ulfric (leader) of the local werewolf pack (Richard). And just to make it interesting, Hamilton threw in yet another guy (this one a wereleopard) in her last book.

So, to recap, we have:
[li]Mystery[/li][li]Drama[/li][li]Hi, Opal![/li][li]Sex[/li][li]A love story[/li][li]Lots and lots of murders[/li]
5 out of 7 from your preference list. Fun fun stuff!

Similar to the Sue Grafton books are the Janet Evanovich books. Hers are One For The Money, Two For The Dough, Three To Get Deadly, and do on. I think she’s up to “Seven”. Her heroine is a bounty hunter. They’re really funny.

The Barbara Kingsolver books are good.
A. Manette Ansay writes some good books.

Michael Connelly’s books are some of the best mysteries I’ve read in a while. He has a series starring his character Harry Bosch, but if you want to try him on for size without getting into a repeating character, try Blood Work or Void Moon, though technically the former does have a repeating character since Terry McCaleb returned in a later Harry Bosch story.

Really good stuff.

You also have other accounts of the same disaster- Boukreev’s * The Climb , written by a guide in the other party summitting that day, and I am told one of the clients wrote one. I think it was Beck Weathers, and is called * Left for Dead * or the like. A little interesting to see where they depart in their accounts. Liked ITA and Climb, haven’t read the third. The IMAX crew shooting * Everest was lower on the mountain when the storm hit. Good film, too.

Confirmed.

Agreed.

If you like mystery, P.D. James and Ruth Rendell are both great writers. Some of P.D. James’s best have been An Unsuitable Job For a Woman, Original Sin, and Innocent Blood, and those I really liked by Ruth Rendell have been The Crocodile Bird, Sight for Sore Eyes, No Night is Too Long, and Simisola. And Josephine Tey is always pretty good, too.

Yes, I love mysteries, can you tell?
