I overheard the wrong part of that conversation

Maybe. It seems like she would have said that without the horse she never would have made it through the year, rather than *spent *the year.

A few years ago I walked through the office I worked at just in time to hear “If she doesn’t get up by Saturday you’re gonna have to shoot her.”

Now I knew that she and her husband had a cow that had given birth a day or two before and was unable to stand up. They did, in fact end up having to put the cow down. But I told her afterward she was lucky a random patient didn’t overhear that snippet of conversation.

I use some of the following:

“… and that’s why he’s no longer allowed at The Smithsonian.”

“… and so it ended up in my mouth.”

“… seriously. Her mother, too.”

“… no, no. It’s just how he was holding the chicken.”
