I-Pad - terrible marketing?

In a related note, The Canadian National History Society had to change the name of their magazine. Why? Because “The Beaver” is blocked by too many school computers as obscene.

I don’t mind the name iPad, it is just that it doesn’t support Hot Flash.

Is anyone else having as much trouble parsing this as I am?

I read it three times and then gave up.

Personally I don’t have any problem with the name iPad but judging from the online reaction it was a bit of a blunder. Of course we should put this in context, as usual Apple’s hype machine has been amazingly successful with umpteen articles about how this device was going to revolutionize everything before anyone had even seen the thing. Now that it’s been revealed to be a rather medicore and underwhelming product it will be interesting to see whether the hype dies down. Certainly the reaction of the technology websites has been largely negative. However my guess is that at least in the MSM the hype has acquired a momentum of its own and will continue at least for a while. Not to mention the fact that media companies seem to be pinning their hopes on the iPad becoming a major source of profit in tough times. Whether all the hype amounts to a successful product remains to be seen however.

Apple invents time travel.

Female, 40, did not make the connection to female products until this thread. Pad is pretty generic word for me - notepad, mouse pad, IMB ThinkPad, etc. Have not actually used pads since high school, so maybe that’s why.

Just wait for the Sprint 4G version of it… Yes, the “WiMax iPad”.

The marketing dept should not have said the iPad was up tight, out of sight, and in the groove.

Boy am I juvenile.

I hope the iPad wrecks AAPL stock so I can buy some and hold it until the next iPad is announced and I can sell it for a 15%+ profit.

How could Apple’s Marketing research have missed this?? :stuck_out_tongue:

Quoth K: “A *person *is smart. *People *are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.” Individually, we all know that the name won’t stop Apple from selling truckloads of these things, but as a group of big kids, we’ll all snigger at the name and say no self-respecting individual would be caught dead with one.
I think the parallel to the name “Wii” is pronounced. By the time the Wii launched, people had been discussing the thing (including the name) exhaustively for months. It’s already started with the iPad.

I didn’t either. They were actually making fun of it on NPR the other day, though they didn’t really seem to be referencing the name so much as the uselessness of the product.

I dont like the product (too much lockin, too expensive, no ports, no flash, etc) but the name is fine. This just illustrates that popular humor on the internet is somewhere between what 5th grade boys find funny and mindless toilet humor.
