Apple Presser Discussion Thread: iSlate? Verizon iPhone?

OK, I am not an “Apple person” I own a PC not an apple, I have a Blackberry not an iPhone. I have an iPod but barely use it. Yet, I am strangely excited by today’s potential announcements of the iSlat (or iPad or whatever) and the possibility of a Verizon iPhone.

New York Times Live-blogging.

So how expensive will Apple tablet be? Will it have facial recognition? Will it cure cancer and resolve disputes in the Middle East?

I’ve only heard very limited information about the new iPad (or whatever it’s called), but initial reactions are expected to be extremely positive. If I heard the report right, I don’t see the big deal – it’s basically a giant iPhone without the ability to make calls.

Now iPhone for Verizon? That’s something I was holding out for over a year-and-a-half, but finally ended up getting a Motorola Droid. Glad I did, too… I love the Android OS and I see the potential it has. The OS is way more powerful than people think.

Engadget live blog, which I usually find more interesting to read. Yeah, it’ll be all about the tablet, probably its artistic abilities for drawing and playing games and such, given this year’s theme.

My wife has an Eris Droid that she loves, it is very slick indeed. As for the iSlate, I think two things are certain. It will be pretty pricey and then after about six months the price will be lowered considerably.

iPad

Yup. Pretty much as expected.

Yup, an oversized iPhone, at least in looks.

phew…I was afraid they’d name it something that could be confused with iPod.

Any news on a release date (do they indicate price at these things or is that too pedestrian)?

This photo of Steve & Woz is priceless -

I love Woz’s combination of ubergeek and hippie. That’s awesome.

Engadget’s being hammered pretty hard but so far Steve hasn’t announced any release date or pricing; he’s still demoing at the moment. It’s basically an iPhone with a big screen and retooled UI to accomodate the larger screen and more expansive feature set for what is basically a giant iPhone-without-the-phone.

The last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it.

No price yet.

On Engadget they are saying it is fast and seamless, I must admit i t looks pretty sweet. I’ve ben wantinig to get an e-reader, but this puts that on hold.

Base feature set:

  • Capacitive multitouch (as expected)
  • 0.5" thin, 1.5lbs, 10 hours active battery life, over “a month” standby
  • 9.7" IPS display
  • 1GHz Apple A4 chip (so that’s what they’re doing with PA Semi)
  • 16-64B storage depending on model
  • Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 802.11n WiFi
  • Accelerometer, compass (natch), speaker, mic, normal 30-pin dock connector
  • Runs iPhone apps (albeit small in the center of the screen) and will have custom full-sized apps specifically for the iPad.

He looks remarkably like Noah Wyle, who played him in a movie.

My friend just Facebook’d “iPad?! iPAD!!! you kidding me with that name??? sounds so… so… kotex!”

Eh - so far, not impressed. Lack of multitasking is fine with the iphone - you really don’t expect to do more than limited, simple tasks on it. But with something of the iPad’s size and high (I assume) price, I expect to be able to switch back and forth readily between browsing, email, and so on - maybe have an IM window open while I read or watch a movie.

Would have been better to just run straight-up OSX.

Yup, if there is no multi-tasking it is a FAIL.

Just think, if you want to pay for the super premium iPad you can get the MAX-iPad, so you can cover the days when you’re streaming heavily…

This isn’t really the earth shattering announcement that I was lead to believe it would be. Very nice, but it’s not going to change the world. iTouch meet iPhone meet iPod meet netbook.

Feels evolutionary, not revolutionary. Yeah, it fills niche, but doesn’t re-define anything.
