I pit Alter Reality Games, and post a warning to gamers

Wow. How old are you? There comes a point in everyones life (Usually before they turn 12) where they stop playing around with cards mean’t for kids. I bet you have hair longer than your shoulders and lanky or possibly overweight. No offence, just a unbiased opinion about your “lifestyle choice”.

I bet you’re a shriveled bitter old man who kicks puppies and robs children because you post a certain way on an internet forum. No offense.

Only if they don’t have the balls to do what they like rather than do what some anonymous punk wants them to do.

It’s one of the unwritten rules of the pit that it’s okay to come in and just bash someone for saying something stupid, rather than start your own pit thread against them.

And mods can’t do the latter, anyways.

Mean’t?

Plenty of adults play Magic. Why not; it’s fun - it’s not like Candyland, where the fun stops cold after a certain age. And it IS possible to get more widely applicable skillz from it. Read up on a guy named Jon Finkel sometime. Heck, some players think of it as poker practice that’s more fun than actually playing poker.

(Seriously; many current and former pro players of Magic are now better known in the larger world as pro poker players. The two games share a lot in common: importance in reading/playing opponents as well as cards, the balance of strategy and luck, making use of limited information, etc.)

Say, how do you feel about video gamers?

I’m not sure which to make fun of here. There’s your poor use of grammar wherein you postulated that my hair is overweight. But there’s also the fact that you guessed I could be either lanky or overweight. One or the other huh? Good guesses! How did you know? Do you get much work as a psychic? “Are you a libra or a capricorn or a cancer? Do you know someone who’s a libra or a capricorn or a cancer? Well they’re going to have a big change in their life.”

That was like Three months ago.

Double post.

Happy twelth birthday!

It was your last post before the one I quoted. Anyway, that’s not the point- why is one type of toy okay but the other not?

[quote=“marochko, post:30, topic:525716”]

Just because psychic’s exsist in the realm of Magik Cardz doesn’t mean they exsist in real life. But no, I don’t unfortunatly.

Seriously, his last post? He didn’t even go back into the thread and thank people for the helpful advice?
Dude, not cool.

PS, he just got skooled by a 12 year old!

You’ll take my Pokemon cards when you pry them from my cold dead hands. :stuck_out_tongue:

I took a three-level dive down the Geek Hierarchy when I started playing seriously. Oh well. It’s like living in New Jersey. Other people may make fun of us, but we’re having entirely too much fun to care.

Pasty of face, yes. But I’m a hot redhead, so what do you expect? (My picture in the photo gallery kind of sucks. But it WAS taken at a Pokemon tournament. And if you don’t think I’m hot, that’s okay. Plenty of other people do.)

It’s hardly a false economy. M:tG isn’t going anywhere any time soon. They may be little pieces of cardboard, but they have real value. The value comes from what other people are willing to pay for them. That’s true of lots of other things, like stamps or coins or whatever.

There’s nothing odd about the cutthroat nature of the business. The cards’ values can fluctuate significantly. AFAIK, M:tG is like Pokemon, where the value of certain cards can go up or down for a variety of reasons. It’s usually because new cards have been released. An existing card can suddenly become much more desirable because it works so well with a new card. That value may be temporary but it’s real. Because people are willing to pay the price because you flat-out need certain cards to be competitive.

Dealing in TCG cards is a gamble, but everyone knows that. You have to accept the losses with the wins.

Just ask anybody who traded or sold all their Claydols and Uxies before this year’s rotation was officially announced. Or who paid $25 for a Uxie right before the league prizes were announced. Of course none of you probably know what I’m talking about there, but the former group made a bad bet and lost, and the latter group just got screwed because Pokemon offered an easily obtainable reprint of a card that was in very high demand, increasing the supply dramatically and thus tanking the value. (they had very good reasons for doing this, IMHO)

Should I have stopped playing with Legos when I was 12 too? I like playing with toys. I don’t care if they’re “for kids” or the kind that are strictly for adults only. Pokemon may be primarily marketed toward children, but they absolutely support and encourage adult players. The Masters division has had by far the most players in every tournament I’ve been to. I’m 38, by the way.

And M:tG is not a little-kid game anyway.

I DO have hair longer than my shoulders. And I’m not sure why that’s a bad thing, even for guys. Long hair on a guy can be totally hot. As for being overweight–Yep. I’m fat. But most Pokemon players that I’ve encountered are normal weight.

As far as Enderw: I had the pleasure of spending a few days with him some years back. He is a perfectly nice looking and charming guy. And he’s neither under- nor overweight. His picture in the photo gallery doesn’t do him justice.

Being in the Pokemon world, I’ve encountered many Magic players, and for a lot of them, the stereotype does hold very true. But not all of them. Sheesh.
Look, I’m used to people making fun of me, making assumptions about me, and looking down on me because I play Pokemon. I know it’s “weird” for an adult, and I frequently avoid telling people about it because I know what their reactions are likely to be. I play because I love it way more than I care about what closed-minded people think. I just expected better from the Dopers.

Dollars to donuts, the people dicking on Ender in this thread are geeks themselves, desperately trying to make themselves feel better by doing to Ender what other people do to them. Now that, my friends, is what’s pathetic.
Anyway…

I feel your pain, Ender. That really sucks. I don’t know if Alter Reality sells Pokemon cards, but in case they do, I appreciate the warning. That’s totally unacceptable. Good luck with your quest.

Enderw24: Isn’t it awesome when you come up with a really great insult, and it goes over the moron’s head, but everyone else sees it go over the moron’s head, and you all get to laugh even more?

Maybe I’m not understanding the OP, but I thought the whole “if they mistakenly price it at price X they have to sell it to me at that price” was an urban legend?

You’re not understanding the OP. This isn’t, “You put a $0.02 sticker on this flatscreen TV, so that’s what you have to sell it to me for.” This is, “You’re charging X, I paid you X, you agreed to sell me the item for X, and now you’re lying to me to say that oops, I’m all out of that, but you can now buy it for X+Y.”

And even more than that, the price on his website wasn’t a mistake either. It’s what the card was selling at for a long time. More than what it was selling for, in fact. I paid what, even just a few days before I purchased through him, would have been a fair, reasonable price that would have netted him a profit. But suddenly the card shot up in value and, oh gosh, he’s run out of the card he just had in stock! Fancy that.

Well I can’t condone lying, but as far as the sale goes, what I’m hearing is that he had the item up at a certain price on the webshop, and then when he runs up your purchase he realizes “oh snap, that’s not the right price, it’s worth way more” and wants to cancel the sale. Isn’t that perfectly reasonable?
