I Pit Fox Sports Football Broadcasts

Yes, I have an HDTV in my living room, but I also have some old (but really, not THAT old) SDTVs in the bedroom and workshop. And Fox Sports has taken me back to the 60’s, where you don’t know what the score of a football game is unless the announcers tell you, because they have moved the bug with the score so far to the left that only the time is showing; the score is completely off the screen.

Sorry, being possessed of a naturally sweet disposition, I’m not very good at rants.

If you’re getting the SDTV signal and you’re not seeing the full screen, it’s likely your TV is setup wrong.

Oh SNAP!

If so, it’s only set up wrong on one station, which seems weird.

Also, when I play the Fox SDTV station on my HDTV, which plays all the other SDTV and HDTV stations perfectly, the bug is still cut off on the left, although not far enough to obscure the score.

What do you have? A digital cable box? Standard coax cable? Satellite? An antenna?

If you have a digital box, I know that the box has additional settings that can change the display type of the screen on top of the standard settings from the TV’s menu screen.

ETA: That cinches it, your display settings are definitely set up wrong.

Of all very good reasons to pit Fox Sports broadcasts, you picked that?

No, it’s definitely the signal that’s off. I don’t know why I didn’t try it before, but I switched to the HDTV station on my SDTV, and it shows the entire width. The picture isn’t squished, either. It has bars at the top and bottom, but it’s perfectly clear, sharp, and in perfect aspect ratio.

I’m no expert, but if the HDTV signal shows full width on the SDTV, and the SDTV signal doesn’t, it’s not the set.

However, I concede that the problem may be with either my local station, or my cable provider, rather than Fox itself.

You may ask why I don’t just keep it on HDTV now that I know the HDTV picture is good. The answer is that I only get about 20 minutes of buffering on my DVR with HDTV, but I get an hour or so with SDTV.

On my tv’s SNL gets cut off on the sides and some other stuff like overlay boxes on sports stations get cut off on occasion.

HDTV wide screen is on auto.

I think its on the broadcasting side cause I’ve tried everything and asked the cable company about it.

The more elaborate these tv’s the more the crap to adjust on all sides.

Frustrating. :frowning:

Problem solved. I emailed the local station the same day as I posted here; I got a reply a day or two later that said they would contact my cable company to see what could be done; and today, the SD signal has a new and better aspect ratio, and the score bug on football broadcasts is easily visible. I can die a happy man.

Wow-- this restores my faith in The Little Guy. Way to be a squeeky wheel!

Not to be an a-hole about it, but I have the same problem with one of the local channels here in BFE, and no, my cable box is in no way programmable, adjustable, or interested in my point of view. No NFL score, and when the local “news” shows a split screen with 2 people talking, 1 see 2/3 of each face . All the other channels are fine.

At least I have hope now that maybe I can contact the channel directly and they can somehow get Comcast to pay attention.
