I Pit HOBBY LOBBY

So would you like to make some kind of a verifiable prediction concerning their future sales figures?

I hardly think that merits a response.

Personally, I predict they’ll do okay because some hobbyist Americans are stupid and other hobbyist Americans are indifferent.

Why not? Your first post hints at your suspicion that “the market” will speak, but nothing more specific about which way, or by what type of magnitude, this market speech will occur.

In short, it’s vague. Why shouldn’t a request for more detail merit a response – even if the response is, “No, I don’t really know in what way, or by how much, the market will speak.”

It may come as some shock to you, but not everyone on this board is primarily driven by the need to sow seeds for future gloating in every goddamned thread.

I’m sure that’s true.

But at the same time, a prediction about some future event is typically offered as a rhetorical device to advance or support the argument being made. Do you agree?

I suppose it does merit a response. Hobby Lobby’s primary customer base is women, who are on the whole more likely than the general public to disapprove of this policy. Hence my suspicion. However, not knowing anything about the location of Hobby Lobby’s stores, the political leanings of its shoppers, or whether there are reasonable alternatives in its markets, I decline to go any further than noting my suspicion.

Perfectly fair.

I’m prepared to bet two bucks that Hobby Lobby ceases to exist within the next 50 years.

Still, they are not being asked to engage in sinful activity. They are not even being asked to support any sinful activity. The (potential) sinfulness is so remote from them that their objection is groundless and amounts to a request to retreat from society. If they were Hare Krishnas, isolating themselves may make logical sense, but Hobby Lobby is a business and as such should be expected to behave as a business, not some kind of on-again-off-again hermits. And, as I noted, their bible thing supports me, not them.

Heros! They have gone from pittances to poverty wages, I am so proud of them.

In fifty years, most folks won’t even know what the word “abortion” means. You could poll them as they emerge from services at the CitiGroup Cathedral…

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest that Hobby Lobby doesn’t require your approval or basking. They have a majority of Supreme Court justices.

Hobby Lobby based their case on a law passed in 1993. Five Supremes agreed that a 20+ yr old law, that is still on the books, trumps the governments current position that ACA/Obamacare can ignore all religious objections. Four Supremes reject the 1993 law and also reject the majorities opinion that this ruling is limited in scope.

While the opinions of the minority Supremes makes for an interesting read, they have little to do with how the ruling will enforced.

It’s unlikely I would live to collect.

Under what framework do you get to decide what is sinful for them?

Not at all. That phrase supports them, because “rendering to God what is God’s” means, “Don’t sin.” It would be an …unusual view… to believe that this verse exhorted Christians to follow a government command to sin.

Fine, I’ll bet with someone else. The offer wasn’t specific to you in any case and it is presumptuous of you to assume so.

And…

I assume you mean that “Caesar,” refers in this context to the government.

If so, then it’s certainly true the government asked Hobby Lobby to cover insurance for contraception.

But isn’t is also true that the government told Hobby Lobby that they didn’t have to comply if complying creates a religious burden?

Are these American bucks or Canadian bucks? One might not be worth anything in 50 years.

Canadian bucks will still be worth something. American bucks will be worthless after they suffer five or six more massive bank failures and debt-ceiling disputes.

Considering most retailers don’t last 50 years, that’s hardly a bold prediction. I’d take the bet, provided you also wager that HL’s top three competitors ARE in business in 2064.

Lovely little country you have there. Be a shame if something were to happen to it.
