I got all the way through the OP before I realized I was mis-reading Veteran’s Day as Valentine’s Day and couldn’t grok why the National Guard would give a shit.

The same thing happened to me. I think someone inserted some magic JavaScript somehow.

I don’t think that’s the (theoretically) hypocritical part.

The company pulled Veteran’s Day as a company holiday. No problems. I’ve never gotten the day off, either, and it’s far from universal.

But then, the same company decided later to offer it again as a holiday (taking away a personal day at the same time) to “honor” veterans. Of course, this was just in time to market itself to unemployed veterans and also possibly get some tax benefits.

Maybe the company can be taken at their word that it’s simply to honor the work of veterans. **But it would be mildly hypocritical to decide it wasn’t an important holiday to celebrate one year only to later decide it was important to honor veterans just as “coincidentally” they get a benefit from doing so. **

Not saying that’s what happened but if it is, it would be hypocritical.

As to the bolded part, that is what got to us. The current employee veterans lost the holiday, but, when there is incentive to get tax breaks (and hire new veterans), they brought the holiday back. Although considering they just laid off 1200 people in the last year, why would they be hiring again? It’s fishy.

This is a company that would jump over a million dollars to save a nickel.

I understand a lot of people do not get this holiday off, and to some it is just another day. To the veterans who currently work here, who lost the holiday three years ago, it was a slap in the face. Now, suddenly, soon after legislation is passed for tax incentives to hiring vets, they bring the holiday back - that is just pouring salt in the wound.

Really? How? Looks to me like something you’re itching to get offended over. And since when is getting a day off work considered “honoring”?
