If you’re using the Ramones as an example of stupid lyrics you’re missing the point, because they were intentionally stupid. It was part of the trash aesthetic - celebrating the disposability of junk culture, elevating b-movies and pulp novels to the level of “serious” art. Devo did something similar - using stupidity in a smart way. Which isn’t to claim the Ramones were intellectuals. But the lyrics were what they were for a reason.
I don’t really listen to music. At all. But this being the original thread, it’s the most likely to survive the inevitable Threadpocalypse (Band Name TM), so I’ll post this relevant link, regarding the difficulty of understanding lyrics, here: Wishmaster - The Misheard Lyrics - YouTube
Yes they are. Or at least they had fun within that genre, among others. *Queen *is pretty hard to pin down in a single category or genre, they were pretty all over the place. But tell me Sheer Heart Attack isn’t metal. Or Stone Cold Crazy, which has been covered by lots of metal bands.
I’ll grant you it’s not speed thrash growl Finnish death metäl perkele, but it’s pretty heavy rockin’ all right. Especially for the era they put those songs out.
OK, metal challenge: post a link to a YouTube video of the most extreeeem extreme metal group ever in the history of extremity, and I’ll listen to it. And will try to appreciate it.
As a guitarist, it is pretty funny to follow this thread. Listen: there are a lot of categories of music that have their appeal, and rules - folks who play metal tend to expect certain tones and techniques to be used; country pickers also have clear, albeit very different, expectations. So?*
If you dig the subtle distinctions that you see and hear in metal, cool. I don’t try to explain John Coltrane’s Giant Steps to folks who think jazz is noise, either. Most cookie monster metal is not my cuppa, but whatever blows your skirt up, you know?
Led Zeppelin did a lot of Tolkien-influenced songs. I don’t think I’d call Zeppelin “metal”, though. (“The Battle of Evermore”, “Over the Hills and Far Away”
However, they’re Zeppelin, so their stuff didn’t suck. Even when it was nothing but:
I’d rather hear that than whatever bullshit the OP’s posting about.
They’re pretty famous (you can go to HMV and buy their stuff). They’re longrunning band, formed originally as a joke. Their ‘schtick’ is to make the most offensive and unlistenable music.
Here’s my deal: it seems like metal fans often assume that somehow everyone would love metal if they’d just give it an honest chance and if you don’t love it it’s proof that you haven’t given it an honest chance and blah blah blah. But I’ve never met one that would give classic bluegrass an honest chance, or serious folk. It’s fine to openly mock music if it’s 60 years old and country, but somehow mocking metal is like attacking their very identity. You’re supposed to keep trying until you “get it”, and they seem to think it’s a unique sort of musical experience.
If bluegrass isn’t someone’s cup of tea, I figure they will know that pretty damn quick, and that’s fine. Why can’t I know that metal isn’t my cup of tea pretty damn quick, as well, and leave it at that?
I must have missed the Sabbath record where Ozzy rapped and the keyboards were more important than the guitars. :dubious: For what it’s worth, I stopped paying attention when King for a Day came out because they suddenly sounded exactly like everyone else.
One of those reasons is they didn’t give a shit about writing anything better.
I’m not saying they couldn’t do metal. They could probably have done any style they wanted. I’m saying they’re not a metal band.
