Liking some things* does* make you a nerd. I’m sorry. I don’t know what to tell you. This isn’t something that began and died in the '80s. The '90s didn’t usher into existence some kind of happy, non-judgmental lovefest. Nerd-dom isn’t necessarily negative, depending on how you wear the terminology, but whatever.
If assaulting an alien spaceship with a gun that shoots rockets in one hand and an electric staff in two others while Alestorm plays in the background is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
(Cue being told that Alestorm isn’t metal, but I don’t care, it’s the only metally stuff I listen to and I don’t care enough to look further.)
Haha, you sound like a John Hughes movie bully, the world has moved past your type of thinking. Guess what, EVERYONE plays video games in some form now. Everyone listens to what they want because they can get exposed to whatever they want on the internet, they don’t need to choose from Radio top 40. Heck in the 90’s if you used the internet for more than 5 minutes in your free time you were a social misfit…now most people have facebooks and spend time online for pleasure.
I know it’s painful to admit that you’re old and your standards aren’t applicable anymore, but you can have some dignity in your stetson as a mature gentleman if you chill out.
Dude, I’m not a metal fan whatsoever, but complete agreement here. The claim of “it’s not music” is bullshit for whatever genre people are currently complaining about.
But I mean, come on, you’re posting this rant on the Dope. You’re not gonna get much here. Just take a look at CS. This place is full of the kind of mental defects that say tired things like “Durr Hurr, Rap is just crap without the C!” and like, make lists of the worst 70’s songs and mention Horse With No Name and Seasons in the Sun and repeat themselves over and over and over again. Any kind of intelligent discussion about music is pretty much wasted here.
ETA: I mean look at what this thread has devolved into.
Umm, seriously? Like 3/4ths of the thread is people refining the OPs points or agreeing with him. I would love for you to show up one day and just participate in a thread rather than cast aspersions all the time.
Really? As I said, I’m a fan of (old) Maiden, but have you never heard The Beatles? Prince? The Clash? R.E.M.? Big Star? The Pogues, even? I’d say Maiden’s songs are fairly limited compared to lots of other bands, emotionally.
Oh you bastard. I thought when it said 01:03 it was one minute and three seconds long. After ten minutes I thought YouTube was broken.
I didn’t fall for your trick though - I dipped in and out for about 20 minutes. It wasn’t very extreme. It’s kind of like a noodly Black Sabbath in their fairies wear boots years, with a singer who is more musical but a lot more self-important than Ozzy. But it was a bit too self indulgent for me to listen to more than about 20 minutes. Could have done with a musical through line.
The Beatles’ music only generates irritation in me. I love Prince and the Clash, but I really only get one or two emotional responses to any of their music.
I say that I am a Heavy Metal fan but I learned several years ago I am not in the current version of the term. There has been exactly one heavy metal album that has contributed significantly to music history and that was Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction. Take that as a line in the sand and move back and forth a little and that is what I consider my heavy metal. I have heard some of what young people call heavy metal and it is a true abomination.
Most of it really is god-awful, terrible noise that is supposed to have the deep themes that only a few distressed souls can understand. No, even dogs know to instinctively run away when it gets played not because of the power but just through shear annoyance and suckitude. It sounds like a bunch of retarded and drugged out poets getting in a fight at a construction site. I don’t care to hear musical reduction and distillation taken to that extreme. The ultimate extreme is pure silence which would be a welcome trend in cutting edge heavy metal.
