Actually, the best diet to regular counterpart I’ve seen is Diet Barq’s Root Beer.
It’s an acquired taste (Barq’s in general), but if you love BRB, you’ll LOVE D-BRB. It’s the first diet soda that’s made me realize that I could give up regular sodas and just drink this one only!
I would love it if Sprite Zero were available at restaurants. I hate Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi (which is even worse than Diet Coke), which is generally the only diet soda available, and iced tea at restaurants is almost universally disgusting. On the other hand, I’ve been drinking water at restaurants lately which is probably better for me than any soda, diet or regular. A word to diet-soda seekers, though–if you have access to Kroger grocery stores, their store brand (Big K) diet sodas are delicious and cheap. My favorite is the diet grape, although it makes lots of scary purple fizz.
Coke Zero is pretty good, though. It tastes much better than Diet Coke ever did.
Ah yes. The cans have never behaved this way for me. It’s only the 20 oz. bottles.

Tha hell? This stuff is actually drinkable now? I was wondering why my local Wal-Mart was stocking the crap out of this stuff lately. The only Diet Rite I remember was horendous. But due to a poster on here actually vouching for this stuff, I’ll have to give it another go. The ones that I like the best are Coke Zero and Diet Pepsi Max. I still need some caffine, but not the sugar, and they work well for this. I’ll occasionally drink a Diet Dew when I get a hankering for some Dew, but I don’t drink it regularly. Oh, and as far as diet non caffine drinks, Siera Mist Free is awesome. You guys should try it.
I’ve had similar results from warm bottles of that fruit-flavored diet (no-sugar) carbonated water. Now I find myself wishing I’d watched that recent Mythbusters rerun more closely, where they analyzed the ‘Diet Coke + Mentos = geyser’ phenomenon. I thought the wrap-up had said that it wasn’t just the nucleation but that other components of the diet soda led to geysering.
If you like diet Dew, give Vault Zero a try. That and Cherry Coke Zero are all I drink.
VAULT ZERO?!?!?! Why have I not heard of this yet? I’m soooo on the lookout for this on my next grocery run. Thanks for the heads up yoyodyne.
There’s a Diet Coke that’s made with Splenda, too - it’s got a blue stripe on it, along the Coke swooshy thing, and a cool little “Splenda” seal.
I’m just waiting for the POTB to start using their tasty diet cola technology to make Diet Dew taste exactly like real Dew - they’d make millions from me, that’s certain.
I’d heard something was coming down the pike but I haven’t seen it in stores yet. I can’t wait to try it. Now if only they’d start using it in Diet Sprite or 7Up, or Mountain Dew, so I can drink those things.
Would “middle of nowhere” possibly be in the U.S.? Vault Zero has been out for 3-4 years and I’ve seen it in quite a few states I’ve been in during that time. It’s quite tasty and the “Zero” part only speaks of it’s calories. It packs 117mg of caffeine per bottle, about the same as a regular cup of coffee (give or take). It’s a fairly decent kick for a mainstream soda.
I pit it for a different reason. Zero is the only kind of Sprite I can find. I don’t like diet versions of drinks. I rarely drink soda in the first place, and I want my fully-sugared limon taste, dammit.
Stores here now carry caffeine-free Diet Dr. Pepper. It’s excellent. You might look for it.
Also Diet Shasta is now sweetened with Splenda. Much improved from when I had it before.
I love Sprite Zero too. I rarely drink soft drinks, but when I do, it’s Sprite or Coke Zero.
Last week, I accidentially made a really yummy concoction- I decided I wanted a little orange juice, and forgot to pour the leftover Sprite Zero out of my glass first, ended up with about half and half… it was GOOD! I have done it several times purposely since!
Fuck you. You said you loved me.
~ diet Fresca
Wait. There’s no such thing as Diet Fresca, is there? Now regular Fresca…holy shit, I love that stuff. Haven’t tried any of the fancy new flavors, but I loves me some grapefruity Fresca goodness.
Fresca is diet, isn’t it? At least I never seemed to see it in a sugared formulation.
Just the opposite. All Fresca is diet, always has been:
From Wikipedia:
*
Since its inception, Fresca has been marketed in the United States as a calorie-free, grapefruit-flavored soft drink, ostensibly catering to discriminating adult tastes. Fresca underwent several major ingredient changes since its introduction. The drink was originally sweetened with cyclamates, which were banned by the FDA in 1969, and the banned ingredient was replaced with saccharin. However, in 1985, the saccharin was replaced by NutraSweet-brand aspartame. More recently, around the time of the 2005 redesign, acesulfame potassium was added as a secondary sweetener.*
That is, of course, what I meant. I’m just retarded.
This is one of the greatest typos ever. Band name!
Ooh, where’s ‘here’? I’ve since done some research and did indeed discover CFDDP, but the reason I never knew about it was because for some ridiculous reason, the NY bottlers don’t make it / distribute it (whatever the proper term is). Craziness! How could you not sell such a glorious product to one of the most populous cities in the U.S.?
If I want some, there are places one can order online – like Old Docs, which is apparently Nirvana for Dr. Pepper fans. I’m not sure my obsessive need for yummy pop drinks is quite that demanding, especially considering the S&H. Otherwise, until my local NY bottlers buy a freakin’ clue, I’m S.O.L. on the CF-DDP. Woe!
Fresca is pretty darn good, though. I just miss my lovely, dessert-like Diet Dr. Pepper, which I used to chugalug before I decided to cut out caffeine.
