Ah, Michael Holding–I miss hearing his laconic commentary, and I look forward to hearing him again say things like “lashin’ de bowlin’.”
One silver lining about the abandonment, at least for me, is that since the Test starts at 9 am local time here I can read text updates all day during what’s shaping up to be a dull week at work here.
Edit: It’s kind of cool that one can just casually run into “Whispering Death” at the shop!
I like his commentary, but i miss his bowling more. He had one of the most beautiful, smooth, flowing actions in the history of test cricket. Although, as an Australian supporter, i sometimes found it a bit hard to watch when he was knocking the Aussies over.
Lamer still that the Antiguan government and the West Indies board decided to take a share of the World Cup money to build a ground as bad as this one, and let the Antigua Recreation Ground, which is now going to hold the Test anyway, sit empty a few miles away.
Downright shameful to name the new, worthless ground after Antigua’s greatest treasure, Sir Vivian Richards (who was at the abandoned Test and was shaking with rage about the day’s events).
You get the feeling that a whole heap of money has ended up where it didn’t belong, don’t you? :dubious:
Sir Viv has my unreserved sympathy. If I were he I would be agitating strongly to bar the attachment of my name to this ground - they don’t deserve it.
Actually, that was my generic next-day’s-headline prediction for all England test matches. Good to see nothing has changed since I stopped watching cricket… 15 years ago.
Yes indeed. The funny thing was I was asking what was going on with the cricket getting cancelled and someone said “Ask him - he’s a commentator I think”. I turned around to see the great Holding. He’s a bit more than that.
Antigua is a very small place - population around 70,000 so it’s not uncommon to shop with the stars.
