FACT - None of the radio ads for any candidate were as obnoxious as these. However, I was deeply offended by the NO sides “The money they pay isn’t more than 1% of the state budget.” Hey Vegas dudes, in CA that ain’t chump change, especially if we get it from adding some more slot machines and not giving gambling suckers an even break.
However I’m going to hijack this thread and talk about Republicans. My wife was a registered Pubbie until she saw the error of her ways and registered as a Dem in order to vote for Obama. I’m a registered Dem now. We got one Dem call (from Scarlett which I missed, damn it) and one call for Independents. The other 998 calls came from Paul. McCain and especially Romney. I live in the Bay Area, not exactly a hotbed of homophobia. But the first call I picked up this weekend was from Rick Santorum (yes, Senator foam) urging me to vote for Romney since he’ll protect us from teh gay. I’m afraid this pissed me off so much that when a live Romney droid called later I told him to fuck off and die. I’m embarrassed. I should have dragged the insult out much longer.
Oh, and Voyager, there was a LOT that I found offensive about the “No” ads. Even if I hadn’t examined the issue in depth already, the fact that the “No” side was sponsored by competiting gambling outfits who are accusing the other side of being “greedy” would have been enough to cement my vote.
You do realize that if those propositions fail, it simply means the governor is going to have to go back and negotiate a better deal, right? The tribes WANT those extra slots; they’ll deal.
I don’t object to good old fashioned electioneering for personal profit. One thing I noticed this year that besides the BS name of the organization supposedly running the ad, they have to give the identify of the group paying for it. Very helpful.
BTW, proof of the idiocy of CA voters is that prop 91, with no support and with a “for” message saying to vote against it, got 42% of the votes. I wonder if anyone has every studied if these ads do any good - they sure didn’t for Mitt.
