Twitter Finally Blocks Attempt To Disenfranchise Voters

Yesterday, Robert McNees, a physics professor at Loyola University, was curiously scanning through the popular alt-right account @TheRickyVaughn when he came across a number of tweets apparently designed to spread misinformation about voting among African-American and Spanish-speaking citizens. The tweets told voters they could “avoid the line” and “vote from home” via text (which, to be clear, they can’t). They were photoshopped to look as if they’d been created by the Clinton campaign, down to the small-print “Paid for by Hillary for President 2016” disclaimer at the bottom.

The photoshopped campaign ads may violate FEC laws. They also appear to be in direct violation of Twitter’s policies, which state in part that “Twitter accounts portraying another person in a confusing or deceptive manner may be permanently suspended.” The tweets could also be in violation of Twitter’s spam rules.
These kinds of fake voter ads have appeared on Twitter from numerous Trump-supporting accounts during the campaign; just last month, the Democratic National Committee condemned a similar fake voter ad tweet sent out by Trump adviser Roger Stone.

The only way I can imagine that typical SDMBers hold such ridiculous views on the capabilities of Black Americans is to assume they do not know any. There was a poll during the Democratic primary that saw Bernie Sanders absolutely crushing. This buttresses my claim because Sanders only got any play where there were no Black people.

In any case I take certain liberties because it pleases me to do so. I see you live “near Philadelphia”, I don’t know how near but you may not be one of those I enjoy lampooning.

I don’t feel particularly compelled to “show” you. Let’s just say that i view human beings as individuals with agency, not atoms ping-ponging around the universe. This knowledge is only special because most SDMBers lack it.

Vote suppression in Florida
I’m guessing that the rejected ballots come mostly (entirely?) from areas that tend to vote for the Democratic candidates.

In a story that has not been able to gain much traction in the national news, the top election official in Florida – the Florida Secretary of State, Ken Detzner – has been sharply rebuked and reprimanded for attempting a disgusting misuse of the legal system to prevent thousands of mail-in ballots from being counted in the presidential election. Detzner was appointed by Republican Governor, Rick Scott.

ABC broke the story, saying “U.S. District Judge Mark Walker accused Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner of delaying a hearing on the lawsuit “so that he could use every second available to run out the clock” so there wouldn’t be enough time to address problems raised in the lawsuit. The judge also said Detzner’s actions amounted to an “undeclared war’ on the right to vote in Florida, the largest swing state in the presidential election…” This court will not allow the Florida Secretary of State — a high-level officer of the State of Florida — to take a knee and deprive Florida citizens of their most precious right,” Walker said in his order.”

In NYS we ask challenged voters to sign an oath.

There definitely needs to be something done about this. There need to be consequences for this kind of behavior. Maybe if a few did go to jail it would stop.
