I Pit the ID-demanding GOP vote-suppressors (Part 1)

I’m a Knight of Columbus and a Knight of the Holy Speculchre. I can’t keep track of another membership.

Another day, another Republican campaign trying to commit voter fraud: Only 244 of McCotter’s 1,830 submitted signatures were valid; official calls it ‘unprecedented’ fraud

ACORN did it.

It takes a long time to get through 21 pages of discussion.

I would like to add, because it’s been brought up a few times, that I did live in Washington in 2006 and I am certain no gubernatorial election occurred. 2004 was another matter, and it was indeed close. During the recount process Rossi stated that whatever the results Gregoire should accept it as final and not subject the people of the state to lawsuits. Until he lost. The Republican case centered around claims of voter fraud and though most of the contested votes were based in King County the case was heard in a county with a strong Republican stronghold. The crux of the Republican argument was that illegal votes had been cast and that those votes must have been primarily in favor of Gregoire thereby handing her an election she didn’t really win.

The best part was when they presented their evidence. The only evidence the Republicans had to prove their case that illegal votes were cast making Gregoire the winner were votes that went to… Rossi. Yeah, you heard me. Gregoire won the case, and the fraudulent Rossi votes were subtracted from his total. Hilarious.

Another important thing to bring up in regard to the 2004 WA gubernatorial election is that John McKay was the US Attorney in the state at the time. John, a Republican, was under a lot of pressure to find fraud perpetrated by Democrats. He had repeatedly stated he found no fraud nor would he convene a grand jury for political reasons . Guess who was one of the 8 US Attorneys later fired by President Bush?

Absolutely improper. McCotter should resign immediately.

Jeebus Marimba, Florida is going to be a napalm clusterfuck, Texas too, most likely. Leads me to think the guys who crafted this cross-country full court press, minds vast, cool, and unsympathetic… have lost control.

The beauty of the plan was in its modesty. They weren’t looking to strike hundreds of thousands of voters from the rolls, the goal wasn’t “disenfranchisement”. The goal was to trim just enough votes to win the close ones, so they didn’t need to actually deny anyone’s right to vote, just make it more difficult, tiresome and expensive. To discourage, rather than forbid.

And drape it all with a mantle of legitimacy, it’s all about preventing unicorn stampedes and the resulting injuries. Nobody is in favor of unicorn stampedes, all the polls say so, and besides its legal. (Even though, as I understand it, the Constitution is silent on the question of unicorn…)

But it seems this is going a bit further than they had wanted, I think Govs Perry and Scott have gone off the reservation and the deep end, simultaneous. How in the name of Bleeding Og is there any chance to get this whole voter database mess cleaned up in time. If they dived in head first, worked like dogs, maybe. And had total cooperation.

Now, if they had stuck to The Plan, it would have been a lot better, as well as deniable. If they won, all they had to do was fend off lawsuits and declare a legal victory. If they lost, they would at least have established the grounds for attacking the results, the Recount Eternal. But the way its going now, the elections will be so utterly fubar, not even Bricker could say “the people have spoken!” with a straight face.

The guys who cooked up this scheme were the wardens of the Republican Party, but the inmates have taken over the asylum. Which was not part of the plan…

He did.

I’m quite sure our beloved counselhor knew that already.

No, and I just reviewed the link originally posted, and it doesn’t mention it, so why would I have known it?

Becuase you made the leap from "The populace has always had the power and the right to craft voting laws. They can absolutely vote to restrict voting, as long as their actions are consistent with Constitutional guarantees. " to “As the Voter ID laws are.”

The second statement doesn’t flow logically from the first.

The second statement is not a logical consequence of the first. But both the first and second statements are accurate.

I sort of feel like you’re owed a bit of an apology or several. Hello? Anyone?

The least I can do is welcome you to the discussion and thank you for your bravery and personal story. I’ll also add that I’m pretty sure that mud will just wash right off and that–worst case–you’ve still got what, maybe eight lives left.

So we got Texas and Florida with elections almost certain to spatter on the windshield like a bug, Mississippi and Pennsylvania looking to follow, any others? Boy, the confidence of the electorate sure gonna soar like an eagle now, huh? Yessiree Bob, there’s nothing like seeing your state legislature conspire like this to boost your electoral confidence. Unless you are in that unhappy minority of Americans who aren’t Republicans. Their voter confidence apparently doesn’t count for much, not compared to the real Americans.

For instance, this “Sunday voting” thing inflicted upon black people. Just the tonic they needed, to bolster their confidence. Has anyone offered an explanation that doesn’t boil down to “Fuck you, you’re black!”? Not to my knowledge, anyone who has such is encouraged to deliver. Be good to have such an explanation, wouldn’t it? And Diego Garcia and Jesus Ramirez gotta be just busting with voter confidence now, huh? Even though they may darkly suspect they’d have an easier time if they were named Gus Johnson.

So, let’s have a round of heartfelt appluse to the Republican Party, who stand for Law and Order and create chaos and anarchy! Nice work, guys, and a special personal shout out for our own Bricker, they all have so much to be proud of! Dare we hope for a repeat of our glorious 2000 election, where the guy who lost the popular vote by half a million soars to victory with a mandate from the people!

We live in interesting times! Thanks, Republians, and a special thanks to you, Bricker! Couldn’t have done it without you! Electoral confidence, busting out all over!

Yippee Skippee, way to go, guys! Hoorah, huzzah, and hip-hip-hooray! This November lookin’ like the biggest electoral clusterfuck in our whole history, and for this, we have you to thank!

If 90% of people can climb three flights of stairs, then I guess everyone can.

Maybe not, but 100% can fall down three flights! Didn’t think about that, did you, Mr. Smarty-pants!

You like these pants? Thank you!

Wassamatta dese pants? Euripides?

Actually, the inseam isa too high, it rida up my Aeschylus.

It’s been pretty big news recently. Weren’t you the one making the argument that politically oriented posters here should be well versed enough in current events to catch a reference like “It’s the right thing to do?”

Can Eumenides? Which is a perhaps a rather topical lesson in this thread.
