Of course, there’s also the argument that they didn’t pull it off successfully, since Leavitt leaked it.
I don’t think that’s enough evidence, but it is some (small) amount of evidence. And even if it was planned and even if they do get caught, they probably won’t get caught today. If, two weeks from now, there still isn’t a metaphorical smoking gun, then I’ll say that I’m confident that this wasn’t staged. But let’s see.
I do appreciate how level-headed she is, and how she reports the facts without over-interpreting things. Although one time, in reference to something that Trump did she did let slip, “This is bonkers!”
I lament the death of real journalism, even in the mainstream media. Every now and then I rewatch All the President’s Men and sit and weep for what we have lost.
I’m not a journalist. We are not journalists here on this board. As a group, I believe we are mostly intelligent and level-headed, however, we do bring things up, sometimes outrageous things, kick them around, speculate, and throw things at the wall to see if they stick.
I appreciate your comments, and thank you for them.
A Facebook friend of mine posted a tweet by Matt Walsh that says:
To which I responded “and yet you have no trouble believing that Democrats staged a riot on Jan 6 to stop the certification of an election that they actually won.”
They’re the kind of toxic nuttery associated with right-wing loons, and it’s disgusting to see apparent left-of-center types invoking a “staged” event, like some have kept insisting the Butler shooting was.*
These people need to grow the hell up.
*though you don’t have to be on the Left to yammer about that shooting being “staged”.
That’s still spectacularly successful as conspiracies go. 24 hours or so in, we have no suggestion the shooter is anything except a random nutjob, and the secret service haven’t leaked the fact that someone in the administration tried to get them on board an assassination conspiracy. That’s way beyond the ability of the current administration to pull off.
Not even close. His approval is around 40% similar to other presidents in their second term. W Bush had lower and so did Trump himself in his first term. I agree it wasn’t staged, but I love the circus that he has created biting him in the ass.
If it had ended up that it was staged, I would be both surprised and not surprised. But it was far too soon to be jumping on such a bandwagon. I have learned to wait for more details before having anything to contribute.
The most compelling argument against it being staged, is that it didn’t result in a photo op of Trump being all defiantly nobly macho, like the last time…which would have been the whole point of the operation.
No, the whole point of the “operation” would be to keep trump from making a fool of himself or revealing inescapably his advanced dementia. And/or from having have to listen to the extreme ribbing he would have got. Give him an easy and totally understandable out.
It would have had nothing to do with the fuhrerballroom.
The most compelling argument is an utter lack of evidence or even decent reasons why it would be staged in the first place. The best I’ve heard is a nebulous line of thinking that a distraction would be convenient for him and people wouldn’t trust him not to try something like this.
As if he can’t generate distractions with a mere tweet.
As if he couldn’t have just not gone as people expected him to do anyway.
I’m not convinced it was either. It wasn’t “staged” but it might not have even been directed at him. As I believe I said earlier in the thread, it could have been someone wanting to kill reporters, maybe even to show off in front of Trump.
Of course, before knowing anything real, Trump is going to insist it was about him because the world revolves around him, and he’s the invincible hero that can withstand anything.
I really don’t know why people are going on about this. At this point, from all evidence, it was somebody who was upset with the president. There really is no reason to believe otherwise. People talking about, how is it possible someone could get a shotgun into a hotel, must believe that all hotels in DC have metal detectors or some such, or check everyone for firearms at check in. We don’t know when the assailant checked in, but you could do it several days before and have weapons in your bags and no one would know.
There is no evidence that it was staged, there is evidence that no matter what the circumstance, Trump will only think about how it makes him look and what he can get out of it. And his handlers and his toadies are saying how it is only because they luuuuv him so much that law enforcement acted to protect him. Not, they did their job, and well, they did it out of personal love for the president because he is so awesome.
