Yes, Obama alienated the country so horrifically that he currently has a 54% approval rating. Which incidentally is about 4 points higher than it was at this time in 2012, where he beat Romney by 332 electoral votes to 206.

Obama alienated the country so totally that if he were running today against Trump, B. Hussein Obama would win in one of the biggest landslides in memory. B. Hussein would be wiping the floor with that deceased orange marmoset that Trump wears on top of his head.

Obama’s effect isn’t too different than Bill Clinton’s in 2000 in the wake of the Lewinsky scandal. I do think it hurt Gore pretty hard, but I also believe Gore hurt Gore as badly as Lewinsky did. Gore thought he’d win a state any idiot could be known would be rigged against him, FL, with his opponent’s brother in charge there. Gore got 267 EVs (before the faithless elector brought his official tally to 266 EVs) so any single state would’ve put him over the top because all states and DC have >3 EVs. Hillary has not made huge tactical mistakes that Gore made; that’s why I hold Obama far more accountable than I do Bill in 2000.

Not according to the polling aggregates. The most conservative, 538, still has Hillary as a 2-1 favorite, and most of the others have her closer to 10-1 or higher.

No. Nowadays, to be a “proper” liberal, you also have to believe in fairy tales. You have to believe that women get paid 78 cents on the dollar for the exact same work as men (they don’t). You have to believe that the best way to combat dissenting views is to ensure they don’t get aired in the first place (and, if such airings are unavoidable, that “safe-spaces” are available to cloister vulnerable spectators). You have to believe that “cultural appropriation” is both a new phenomenon and that it actually matters. You have to be blind to the cynical brutality of Islamism but heaven forfend a white guy wear the wrong fucking shirt, or chalk ‘Trump 2016’ on a sidewalk.

It’s just excruciating, and I firmly believe the prevalence of this kind of masochistic pseudo-liberalism is one of the driving forces behind the rise of the so-called “alt-right”. 10 years ago, believing in abortion rights, gay rights, equal rights for non-majority racial and ethnic members, and keeping religion out of the public square was enough to make one a liberal here in America. You could also believe and fight for those things but not have to buy every bit of college professor post-colonialism and critical race dogma.

You’re right. The problem with the left is that we have won all of the important fights and now we are fighting over scraps and bragging rights. You don’t see right-wingers bagging on each other for not being right-wing enough. They unite.

I absolutely believe that my country has fucked over natives left, right and center. I absolutely believe that the vast majority of their problems are a result of systemically imposed oppression. I certainly don’t believe that natives are genetically predisposed to violence.

But if I’m out at night and I see a group of natives coming toward me I’m much more on guard than I am if it is a group of whites. This isn’t because natives are inherently worse than whites but because when random violence happens in my city it is generally natives that do it.

All of the historicity does not change the fact that if you are out and downtown and get jumped it is more likely to be natives than white people.

Expressing this opinion makes me a racist.

I’m most certainly not racist. I don’t believe that their problems are because their race is problematic. I believe that their problems are result of enforced poverty and hopelessness. Give a native the same opportunities as a white person and they will have pretty much the same outcome.

Ideology should not trump reality. The real truth is that if I’m to be the victim of random crime the perpetrator is more likely to be native. Refusal to accept a fact does not negate the fact. But screaming “racist” is the quickest and easiest way to demonstrate your progressiveness without actually doing anything.

We are most smugly self-congratulatory people there are.

So while the right-wing bands together in spite of differences of opinion on nuances we eviscerate each other over them.

That, combined with the immediate convenience of myopia, is the reason that we are losing.

Until such a time as we are prepared to accept that our allies might not agree with us absolutely we will continue to lose and bemoan our self-imposed fate.
