One of the best games ever…
I have had nightmarish dreams about the gargoyles more often than I should admit.

I gave up on Zdoom and run doomit.
Mrs. Plant refuses to play unless the M16 patch is loaded.
So I was wrong. Sue me :).
Actually, the gist I get is that “normal” doom 3 will look the same, but a high-end PC will be able to scale the graphics up even more while (duh) the xbox wont.
Good this this wasn’t in GQ, eh?
Funny thing about that game, Ford. Unlike other games, when I hit alt-tab to switch to something else for a moment (say, posting here, or checking email), the game will not pause. As I use the other application, I can still hear the sound effects from DoD. And you can’t really pause it (that I can tell, anyway!)…
Well, yeah, the PC can get much higher resolutions, while the Xbox is gonna stick with 640x480. Plus the PC can get mods and upgrades and patches and all that wonderful stuff that makes life worth living…
I coulda sworn I read a Carmack quote somewhere in Slashdot that they’re going to have to scale back effects as well though – shadows and the like. Since I can’t find it though I guess it becomes an unsubstantiated rumor :).
Well… that’s the beauty of the Xbox, in that it was designed to handle stuff like shadows and dynamic lighting without much loss of performance… all that stuff has been shunted over to the graphics processor, which is why the Xbox does so well with a relatively slow (compared to PC’s) CPU.
I think you probably heard the report that the screenshots and game caps shown at E3 were mid-range graphics capabilities of the Doom 3 engine, and that probably got crossed with something else… or something…
I don’t get how you can play a FPS with a game console controller. It makes it like driving a tank. Hold down this button to turn right, this one for left, this one for look up etc.
IMO its totally unplayable without the direct, 1 to 1 feeling a mouse gives you. You move the mouse slow or fast and you turn slow or fast.
Actually, console fps’s are getting better. You can get a pretty decent amount of control with dual analog sticks, if you’ve got a light touch.
IIRC, the Xbox’s built in graphics processor is equal to a Geforce 3 (in fact, I think it IS a Geforce 3), so it’ll have to scale back on the shadowing and dynamic lighting–Doom 3 is designed to max out a next gen video card. At the highest settings it’ll even chug on a Radeon 9700…
