I pledge allegiance to the flag

I went to an outdoor concert in Clearwater, FL the other day. Before the music started, the MC was talking and then he says, “Let’s all say the pledge of allegiance”. So everybody stands up and puts their hand over their hearts and recites the pledge of allegiance. What the hell was that all about?

Possibly a 4th of July thing?

:smack: OK, that makes sense. I thought for a minute maybe they were going to take a hand-count on Bush backers.

Can one not be patriotic and love America while hating the current leadership? Why does it have to be a Bush issue?

I’m confused.

I love America, I don’t really have a problem saying the pledge. It just seems to me the “flag wavers” lately are the ones backing Bush’s atrocities. So I was a bit reluctant at first, thinking this might break into a Bush-backing rally.

I’m a Boston resident but many years ago, I used to attend Auto Races (oval track NOT drag racing) in New Hampshire. Before the races started for the evening, the announcer would lead everyone in reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance”.
So, this isn’t just a

  1. 4th of July ritual OR a
  2. Bush popularity poll OR a
  3. Florida tradition.

I don’t see much difference between reciting the Pledge of Allegance and singing the National Anthem, especially if it’s before the start of a sporting event. Either is appropriate any time during the year.

I always thought that the anthem was appropriate for sporting and other big events if those running it wish to show their patriotism, but the pledge… Just seems odd for some reason. They’re assuming that everyone in their crowd is American and that everyone there has no problems with the pledge or any part of it while in any crowd of several hundred people some do. I’m sure those hesitant people would have less qualms with singing something patriotic than reciting a somewhat controvercial pledge (at least some of it) 50s communist China style.

And its music
