I wonder if rabies vaccine is obligatory after coming into contact with bat in the UK.
That, or at least careful examination for any signs of bites. I can take a look, if needed.
My stepfather used to work as a occupational health doctor at a large paper mill (yes, there is a connection). One day, he had a patient come in who was complaining about sharp pain in his foot. After ascertaining that this worker had been performing no unusual tasks and the outside of his work boots were undamaged, my stepfather proceeded with an examination of the painful foot. He took off the guy’s boot, removed the mouse, bandaged the toe that the mouse had been biting, and sent the guy back to work. And then called me.
It’s amazing what people fail to notice!

That was my first thought when I heard the story this morning. But then I remembered that there’s no rabies in the UK, and they’re very careful to keep it that way.
I used to work for the humane society, and I tried to keep abreast of such matters.

A (very) few cases of rabies have been found in British bats, but the risk of infection to humans is very low – of course, that may be partly because we don’t generally keep them in our foundation garments.
One man did die of rabies in 2002, but he was an unvaccinated bat-handler, which presumably put him fairly high up the risk scale.
Stop feeding them, then. Sounds like they’re big enough!
