I quit my job!

As of September 10th, I no longer have to deal with the hell that is McDonalds.

The maintainance man at my old store called me out of the blue a few weeks ago, and asked if I was intrested in a new job. Apparently one of the managers from his McDonalds quit, and took over a Sbarro’s franchise. He asked Bob to help him run the place, and if he knew of anyone that could be part of the startup. Bob thought of me, he’s always adored me like a daughter. I’ll be making $10 an hour (I’m making $9.15 at McD’s), working better shifts (i.e. not until 3 am every night…), and I’ll be back with Bob again. We used to work so well together. We made an awesome team. I was originally just going to be acrew person with no responsibility whatsoever, but I ended up agreeing to be an assistant manager. I really liked the idea of a demotion too…oh well.

I gave my notice to my boss yesterday, and needless to say, she wasn’t exactly happy. She offered to make me her highest paid swing, giving me a boost up to around $13 an hour. As tempting as that was, I need to get away from McDonalds. On my last pay review, I got a 15 cent raise. I work my ass off for that damned store…I come in whenever they need me, I do double shifts, I work shorthanded and save labor, I’ve only called in sick twice, and that was because the doctor absolutely refused to let me work. And I was worth 15 cents to them. It shouldn’t take me quitting to get a raise I deserve if I’m really worth it…thy should have given me the money I deserved back when I had my review. I think even if Charlene (the area supervisor) were to offer me $15 an hour to stay, I’d decline. It’s not worth it anymore. She scheduled a meeting with me on Wednesday, to try and talk me out of it. Bob’s petrified I’m gonna change my mind and stay at McD’s…I had to pinky swear I wouldn’t cave…

I just had to share though…LA LA LA, I QUIT MY JOB!!!

[sub]hehe…think I’m excited?[/sub]

Good for you. You really should try to talk Bob into a better wage. Tell him straight out, “Bob I really want to work with you, but McD is offering me $13. Can you do a little better?” You’ll proabably be surprised to find that he can.

Congrats!

Nobody ever gets a significant raise until they get another offer. Nobody told you?

What some people do is look for a job somewhere else when they first become dissatisfied with their wage/salary. If they get an offer they inform their boss of the salary they were presented and sometimes the boss will sometimes give a raise. It’s conniving but it works.

So I guess that means you can finally stop giving out blowjobs for soup:)

[sub]OW! STOP HITTING ME![/sub]

Great news for you, but who’s going to give us McDonald’s updates and dirt now??
All my very best in your new endeavor!

Hey Pammi, good for you!

Let me know if you ever get sick of food service. My job is hiring at the end of the summer. Sure it’s a call center, but the bennies and the hours are great. I’ve found that assholes are eaier to deal with over the phone than in person.
Good luck at the new job!

Not a good idea. I read an article many years ago advising you not to take a counter-offer from your current employer. The article’s reasoning was that the current employer just wanted to keep you on long enough to find a replacement, and that the conditions that made you want to take a new job would still exist. It noted that people who took counter-offers were often fired or demoted within 6 months, or they quit for the same reason they were going to quit for originally.

Congrats on becoming the newest SDMB McDs escapee… and on your new job.

Hey, congratulations! Nothing beats getting out of a shitty job! Oh, and do consider what Bill H. said… You’ve got nothing to lose, do you?

I told you she took after me, but nooo… you wouldn’t listen. And now I bet you’ll bruise

Congratulations Pammipoo! Never stay at a job you hate. Even with a really good raise, it’s never worth it.

friend Pam,

I hope your new job is wonderful!

It may not work. The department I work in had three people. The top guy was one that had the most training and education, but would never share the details that would have made us all more efficient. He saw the knowledge he had as “job security.” He became increasingly more unreliable, and his need for money (another story) made him moody and difficult to work with.

He attempted this ploy. He found another job and went to the boss to get a counter offer. (He also exaggerated the offer) The boss wished him well in his new job and accepted this as two weeks notice. He spent the greater part of this two weeks attempting to get the boss to let him keep his job.

The two of us left had a meeting with the boss. He asked if we could handle the learning process and fill in what would be needed. We said we could. We each got a 10% raise, a company paid cell phone and a new laptop computer. The educational certifications are starting to kick in, and we are doing fine.

The other guy is now at his new job for $3.00 an hour less than he was making with us, and is now way off the cutting edge of the industry, doing routine non-technical service work.

$10.00 an hour at sbarro’s? Jesus, I started at lower than that doing tech support for a major computer company, and I’m not that much above that right now…

$13/HR for bein’ an imitation Whopper flopper!?! Keeeeerist! Back when I was workin’ at McD’s, I was barely making $5/hr! I’m makin’ $13/hr now, and I hate my job! (Didn’t like McD’s either, but at least I got laid a lot when I was working there!) Seven years of college, and a year and a half in a trade school and I end up making the same amount of money as someone flippin’ burgers! Thank God for the American educational system!
