Me too! Except that Master Po would bogart the joint, and Grasshopper would have to try to take it from his fingers.
Quoth Revtim:
Believe it or not, it used to be a lot worse. We’ve never had a good on-site search engine here.
“You can use it, just don’t say that you’re using it.”
“Don’t ask, don’t tell.”
I still cannot believe this thing has been broken for a decade. That’s more than half the full life of many members here. It’s a full quarter of my old-ass middle-aged life.
I cannot think of anything else that’s been on the web for ten years, that has been in constant use, that has a malfunction like this that hasn’t been fixed. It might be some kind of pathetic record.
Exactly what is a server, as in the one here that is so limited.
I checked a server at apple, and it’s only $499. How does that compare to the SDMB’s equipment?
I’m serious, I really don’t know.

Can we have a concept of something like “search credits”? That is, now, with the 5 minute wait, we are essentially allowed 12 searches per hour.
Can vBulletin be made to enforce the 12 searches per hour, without enforcing the 1 search per five minutes? That way, you can search 12 times in a couple of minutes, but then you can’t search again for another hour. Or, you can search 7 times in a couple of minutes, and have 5 searches available for the next hour.
Yes, there is a probability of some peakiness, but with so many users and with statistical multiplexing the search load should be rather steady.
Disregarding whether vBulletin allows it, would people like the above proposal?
Not meaning to hijack, but my issue is with edit.

So I don’t always make the deadline and it forces me to have to re-explain myself in another post, which may or may not make sense.
As I wrote earlier, no probs with the search wait, but I understand the stress on the server, and I defer to Polerius and others about how to structure it to better suit everyone.
Quasi out!
I often only do 4 or 5 re-searches (same subject) in the same day, and then no searches again for sometimes weeks.
So yes, that would work.
In addition to the edit function, there’s also preview, which you can use as many times – and as often (no five-minute wait) – on a post as you want.
If I understand correctly, your link goes to software, whereas the Board’s problems have always been with hardware.
There must be a technical thread somewhere that discusses the hardware though – as in what it takes CPU/HDD array-wise to run a board of this size. Anyone?
Maybe C- Loafing brought in a brand new ENIAC. Tubes and all.
This issue has been dealt with on more than one occasion. The Board is hosted by a server that the CR shares space on. We are not the first priority of the company that owns the server, nor are we the first priority of the person who deals with the CR aspect of the situation. In short, the SDMB is not on its own server, and discussion of the issue from that standpoint is fruitless.
I dunno, DSY. It’s good to vent.
See how quickly I calmed down?
Anyway, good ol’ wiki gives me a pretty good idea what one is.
And, of course, google for a picture and article. Which I’m about to read.
I thought we got a whole new server–hence “amnesia weekend”. I know they did a software upgrade too, but weren’t we also supposed to be moved to a shiny new server?
Hear, hear!

Quasi, come back! Enthusiasm is welcomed and encouraged in these environs.

That was a “tongue in cheek” reference to my past history of venting. (Also known as ranting, raving and melting down:D).
Dude, I had it down to an “art-form”!:D:D:D

PS: Unless you just whooshed me? Not too hard to do with me!
Just playing.
