I really hope there's no Academy Awards today.

This is shaping up to be the heaviest fighting day of the war so far. There are now several dead, wounded, and POWs, and heavy combat in the interior of Iraq. The Oscars are the last thing I want to see happen today.

If they are not postponed, is it possible to have the academy awards merely announced with no speeches, musical numbers, and fan fare? We could just have announcers read the winners for a few minutes before the press.

Or will people feel we were cheated out of something?

What, and have all those Hollywood foreign policy experts pass up a chance to vomit…errr, share their political views on worldwide television?
I doubt it.

Then, at the very least, will studio heads pull the plug to keep their “stars” (moneymakers) from saying something that will profoundly offend 75% of the American public?

I don’t see the problem. I’m sure the troops don’t care if they are on.

I don’t see any problem either, since the Oscars continued on during WWII and the Vietnam War. Just don’t watch it and read the results tomorrow or something.

I don’t see a problem with it. I mean, if people don’t want to see it all and want to see the war they can flip to CNN (and then watch CNN tomorrow for the results). Personally I think it will be nice to see a break from it.

I’d like to see something Frivolous on like the Oscars, sorry I want to see Celebrities and their Clothing, instead of War and Killing.

In light of the recent “vomit protests” in San Francisco, this would be absolutely hilarious.

I have to concur with Intaglio…I’d rather see anything other than war coverage right now. i find it somewhat distasteful that people feel the need to watch the war on tv 24/7, never mind on 17 different channels and to the exclusion of other things. Even though the Oscars are self-congratulatory weirdness with a heavy focus on superficiality, at least they’re not depressing and upsetting.

Predictions had been that there would be tons of anti-war comments made by the stars and other film makers, but I don’t think we will hear too much about that now.

I am unashamed to admit that I am looking forward to the Oscars with great anticipation. I have watched too many hours of news coverage about the war, and it leaves me very much in the mood for some frivolity. I enjoy the Oscars every year, and this year, there are some fine films nominated. I’m watching the Oscars tonight and NOT CNN.

It’s just like after 9/11. After being bombarded with images of death and destruction for days, I am soooooo ready for something totally frivolous. I’ll bet Blockbuster is renting mostly comedies these days.

I may regret this, but… cite, please?

'Fraid it’s true viva. Check out this Pit thread for the appetizing details.

Maybe not for * you *…

(runs away quickly)

Well, after seeing the reaction to Mr. Moore’s speech, I don’t think we’ll hear anything else this evening.

Well, I think it’s safe to say the overpopulation problem has been solved. It’s obvious that Michael Moore has balls the size of Russia, so we can all just go live there now.

:sets stopwatch for imminent Moore-directed Pit thread(s):

In Soviet Russia, sperm produces you!

Sorry, it’s the first thing that came to my mind.

As I said on another thread, in 1965-1973, hundreds of American soldiers were dying in Vietnam every week, and the Oscar ceremonies when on unaffected and as glammed up as ever.

Yes, Walloon, but Vietnam wasn’t this intense in its first weekend, and there wasn’t an Oscar ceremony that first weekend.

Although…“the first televised war” was only on the evening news, in the absence of 24/7 cable news channels. And in WWII, as someone pointed out in another thread, people went to the movies because that’s where the newsreels were shown. Things are different now because the news is in your face, all the time, live as it’s happening.

Hmm…does media saturation determine relevance? Is there a Great Debate here? Nah…I don’t wanna go there.
