I saw "White Noise" and so should you

Last night I took my date to “White Noise” and for some reason her 9 year old brother had to tag along…I loved that movie, I haven’t heard any reviews on it but I don’t need to I thought it was great.
If your going out on a date and you want your girl/wife/partner to get close and stay close go see “White Noise”.
I don’t want to do any spoilers because I want people to see it, I thought it was real scary and needless to say my date’s brother was so scared he plans on sleeping in his parents bed for the next few nights.
On the way home I turned the car radio on to static and everybody freaked out.

Under the circumstances, I’d say it’s a safe bet I’ll want to stay away from it. In fact, you’re the first person I’ve heard who actually liked it.

Oh, I get it… White Noise is what you go see when you just wanna mack and not be bothered by actual plot or storytelling, right?

I liked it quite a bit.

However, I also liked Scooby Doo and I thought Event Horizon was brilliant, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

But Scooby Doo was funny. Maybe not a work of art, but certainly amusing.

White Noise had a plot. It just wasn’t a good plot. It had some moments that were supposed to be scary, but I didn’t really find them scary at all. I suppose if your goal is to see a “scary” movie in an actual theatre it is your only choice, but overall, IMHO, I think it’s a poorly put together movie.

No.

Didn’t you START a thread about this movie, before it came out, and everybody said they didn’t want to see it?

When the few people that come into a movie thread only come in to say how terrible it looks, I think you can safely say there’s no interest here.

Yes I did and after seeing it I wasn’t dissapointed so I had to tell people that thought it was going to suck that it indeed does not suck.

It just feels wrong as a longtime member of the SDMB to go see a movie about EVP that isn’t a comedy.

I hope you are just trying to make a joke; otherwise you will miss many very good movies.

Would you not see a movie about ghosts if it was not a comedy? Maybe you’d still see Ghostbusters, then, but it’s a shame to miss Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. Whoopi Goldberg won a best supporting actress oscar, and the film won best screenplay, too.

Would you not see a movie about aliens if it were not a comedy? Too bad you’ll miss Star Wars, ET, Alien and many other fine films.

I’m sure we could continue with other subjects as ridiculous as EVP. Just because it may be a silly belief doesn’t mean it will make a bad movie.

The stupid plot and poor execution of fright scenes is what makes it a bad movie.

So, watch Ghostbusters and avoid Ghost. So far I’m batting a thousand with your examples, so I think I’ll stick with it!

You are 100% correct. However, a bad script will certainly contribute to making a bad movie.

It was an ok movie, but I hated the ending. It’s not a film I’ll be watching again.

As long as it is not presented as a documentary film, I think it is OK to watch.

I like a good scary ghost story, or a good funny one.

I love the Superman, The Movie, does that mean I think there are aliens among us with fantastic powers? I watch Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments, but I’m still a atheist.

When it comes to movies, seeing is not believing.

I haven’t seen the movie, so I can’t comment on it, but I was put off by the ad campaign taglines that evp is a “real phenomenon.” Yes, I know, it’s just to sell tickets and I realize some very good movies have used similar connections to tenuous and unlikely scenarios, such as Close Encounters, which is still one of my favorite movies but there’s just something particularly annoying about this one. Maybe it’s just me. I also find the “based on a real person” aspect of Medium to be extremely annoying. ( I might find it less so if I hadn’t visited the real Allison Dubois’ website.)

The aspect I found particularly offputting (the ad campaign describing EVP as “a real phenomenon”) was completely absent from all of these examples.

it wasn’t a horrible movie, in my opinion, it was just extremely predictable and the main character made me extremely angry (“don’t go in there alone. are you seriously going in there? you’re gonna die…oh look, big suprise”)

This was a mediocre film, elevated somewhat by Michael Keaton’s performance. Whatever the failings of the script, Keaton commits himself to the role and makes the best of it. He’s always fun to watch.

As for the topic itself, EVP is no more ridiculous than ouija boards, seances, black magic and gypsy curses, all of which have been the premise of movies both good and bad in the past. At least EVP was one I hadn’t seen before.

The big problem with the film is that it’s not actually scary. Aside from one or two “jump out of the closet” type moments, nothing scared me at all. It was just… interesting.

Anyone catch the name of the production company? I think they’re a Canadian team, the same one’s responsible for the excellent TV show ReGenesis. The actress who played Jane in ‘White Noise’ is a regular on that show. They also showed a trailer before the feature for a movie called ‘Childstar’, by the same group. It features - you guessed it - some of the cast of ReGenesis.

Gotta get a part on that show. Looks like a guarantee of steady work.
