I shaved my head about a week and half ago. I needed a hair cut on a Monday and no one open would shave the back of my neck with a straight razor, so I shaved it. Honestly I prefer a real short buzz cut. It looks better and no razor burn. All the occasions in the past that I’ve shaved have been basically the same. I’ve shaved it about a dozen times. I have really thin hair on top along with a medium high hair line along with a real thin spot in the back.
For those thinking of this.
Do not do it in the middle of winter.
I speak from experience.
Trust me on this.
If you have big hairy ears, remember to get that hair off of them too. Nothing worse than a guy with a shaved head and big hairy ears. That is, unless you are going to audition to be some new Muppet character.
Well, my roommate has an electric hair trimmer, so he was cool enough to buzz me down to a “3” a few weeks ago. I have to admit, it looked pretty cool, and I was happy to note my head is nice and round and symmetrical. I haven’t touched it since, so it’s already growing back at a good rate (except for the thin areas on top of my head), but I plan to keep it around a 3 or 4 length for a while. Since I have a beard that I already trim at a “3” (and want to keep it), I can’t see totally shaving my head bald, but so far buzzing it short has yielded some positive comments from friends and co-workers.
Glad you have the symmetrical dome. I know you’ve seen some bald guys with beards, right? I think it is a very cool look. I did go ahead and buzz mine with a “2”. Funny thing is that everyone says it looks just the same, they can’t tell the difference.
I’m tempted to go to stubble only this summer once school lets out, so I will have to keep you posted on those results.
Come on, man, it’s time to go Large Richard! I started shaving my head five years ago and can’t imagine having hair again. My mother convinced me to shave my mustache as a birthday present for her (I had a pretty good Sam Elliot thing going, too) and I can’t believe the compliments from my friends. And I can eat without combing first, too.
Anyway…
- I got the idea from James Boswell (see, nothing’s new). He shaved his head as a cure for depression. It didn’t hurt in that regard in my case.
- Very irregularly. Sometimes daily, sometimes it goes 2-3 weeks. I was a Sensor Excel guy until last Christmas, now I’ll never use any blade but a Mach3. I also often use a cheap ($5), AA-powered, foil-type electric razor I got at WalMart, especially while watching television. NiMH batteries make this economical.
- Didn’t Opal shave her head once? Perhaps I’m hallucinating.
- Easy as pie. I wore a military style flattop for almost 15 years before I shaved so I never spent much time on my hair anyway. I do save a little bit on haircuts and I don’t get lopsided cuts anymore.
- No complaints from any quarter. My son thinks it is cool. That’s about as strong an opinion as has been voiced.
- I knew from my basic training High&Tight that I had a decent looking melon, so no fears there.
Oh my.
That picture sure shows that being bald can be a good thing.
(I’ll stop before I’m guilty of public flirtation on a message board.)
WRS
mmmmm… bald guys…
From a female POV, I find shaving a guy’s pate a very (erm…) delightful experience.
It is true that some people just should not be bald. Some people just have lumpy heads. Bald and lumpy is not good.
Me! (25 by the way, shaved it first about 4 years ago)
Every 2-3 weeks, just whenever I feel my head getting too hot and prickly. Maybe about a centimeter or two of growth.
I like being bald a lot. Helps keep my scalp healthy, before my scalp would be quite itchy, flaky and raw (as they say in the ads) and no amount of medicated shampoo would sort this.
People would say, you’d pull more women with longer hair, but I reckon the dandruff would put them off
Dad disapproved as he is bald as well, but Mum approved. Littlest sister reckons when its just shaved it feels like a kitten’s back because its so soft and springy. Some mates reckon it looks ok, one reckons I’d pull more women with it longer (but then I think little of his opinion)
A little apprehensive, but then I soon realised that although my head seems to be a lousy shape for hats and sun glasses, it looks ok bald
