Columbus, Ohio to Grand Junction, Colorado in 24 hours. There was one hour or so break while Ms Hook drove.
Houston, Texas to Columbus, Ohio in 17 hours (I was going to “vintage motorcycle days” in Lexington).
Houston, Texas to Buttonwillow, California in 2 12 hour days (going to work).
Unclviny
From Columbus, Ohio to Pagosa Colorado in about 20 hours.
1,500 miles straight through, only stopping for gas.
personal best: San Francisco to Washington DC, via Oklahoma City, in 2 and one-half days. By myself.
Gallup, NM, to St. Louis, Missouri. 1200 miles. 14 hours.
I didn’t sleep.
Well, okay. I did once; but the rumble strip woke me up before I crashed.
Alone: 900 miles from Montgomery, AL to Wauwatosa, WI - 14 hours.
With DeHusband: 1100 miles from Montgomery, AL to Amarillo, TX - 17 hours.
Just out of…well, boredom… I did a session with Mapquest to get some mileage numbers. Stranger On A Train’s 's St. Louis to Burbank run came to 1831 miles, which seems to be the winner in one stretch. Johnny L.A.’ comes in second with 1619 miles. My Emergency Retreat from Devil’s Tower (there was a woman involved–don’t ask) was a respectable 1430.
Ravenman’s San Fran to DC trek comes out to 2967, but I must assume there was something other than gas, lav, and food breaks. What was your longest unbroken stretch on that trip, Ravenman?
I overnighted somewhere in eastern New Mexico, and somewhere in Tennessee… Knoxville, maybe? It’s kind of a blur, seeing as how I did this in 1994.
SF to New Mexico seemed the longest. Mapquest tells me its roughly 1,200 miles, but I don’t recall which town I stopped in. I have no clue about how many hours it took me, but I’m not a big speeder. I’d guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 18 hours.
OK, beat this, I did a 15 hr straight through Schenectady Ny to McHenry Il with two kids (1 and 3) alone in a van at night (so the kids would sleep), stopping only for gas and the other every 4-5 hours…
Then went back 3 days later…
Damn, I was stupid :wally
Mine’s pretty similar: Baltimore to Reno (2700 miles) in about 55 hours, also alone. Well, with a dog, but she didn’t do any of the driving. I would have made it faster, but I spent a couple of hours waiting for a locksmith to fix my broken ignition somewhere around Indianapolis. 4:00 on a Friday afternoon wasn’t the ideal time to break down.
The longest single stretch was probably from Indianapolis to… somewhere in Wyoming. I don’t remember where - I just pulled off and slept by the side of the Interstate. It was damn cold, though.
Did a day storm chase a couple years ago (which ended up being a bust). Left Omaha around 2am, drove west to Hastings, NE to pick up a friend. We (He) then drove south, getting to Oklahoma City by noontime, then drove southwest to near Childress, TX but late afternoon. Storms didn’t fire that day, so we drove all the way back, getting to Hastings around 2-3am. I then drove back to Omaha, arriving around 6am.
Ended up being around 1700-1800 miles in 27 hours, and we ended up where we started.
Well, if we’re doing TRIPS, I did Augusta, ME to Corvallis, OR and then Corvallis, OR to Ithaca, NY all in a 1989 Volvo.
I wasn’t able to do them in a day, though. Fond memories, though.
