I think I have a new favourite person.

Arunachalam Muruganantham

This man invented a machine which makes sterile sanitary towels quickly and cheaply, which can be used in small scale production by Indian women’s co-operatives. He has, so far, not sold his design to the big conglomerates, keeping this a machine to small, grassroots businesses.

In the process he faced ridicule and ostracism by his friends, relatives and neighbours.

The sanitary towels his machines produce are an affordable alternative to the unhygienic traditional methods Indian women use- including rags, ashes, leaves and corn husks. Making and selling the towels gives women a valuable source of income and the potential to make a better life for themselves and their families.

Story here.

It is nice to see an entrepreneur using his invention and business model for good.

Brilliant!

Thanks for sharing.

I loved how everyone thought he was crazy - and his mother leaving after finding a room full of used towels!

That really is amazing. It’s nice to know that there are people out there still just wanting to make life better for others.

Dean Kamen’s Project Slingshot is pretty interesting too. Another brief summary with picture.

I opened this thread hoping that your new favorite person would be me…

BUT the guy in the story seems pretty awesome and has really made a difference in the world so I’ll let him take the prize

This was so good to read. Thanks for sharing it, irishgirl.

*“Indian. Innovative. I make them, I use them, I tell my friends. I am free from infection, I am financially independent. I-Pads.” *

That’s a fantastic story. Thanks for sharing it.
