I think I just got a dog

Cheez_Whia - Check out the picture of Jake. He’s a red dobe. Kate was, too.

Someone dumped a dog at my farm yesterday. He was there when I got home from work. Yellow, looks like a lab/shar pei cross. Very sweet. it looks like he’d been chained with a chain directly on his neck - the hair has been pulled out and his neck is black from the metal rubbing on it. His nails are very long. Timid if you raise your voice - he quickly shows his belly. Still, he has a sweet temperment (wags and wiggles) and seems good with my dogs, the cats and the horses. I’m not in the market for another dog - I already have 5. I’m hoping that a co-worker who has been talking about wanting a third dog might take him.

I call him Charlie Brown, because he has a blocky head and seems to have had the football pulled out from under him a few times.

My dear sweet Tulip is a Dobie i picked up at the pound when she ran out of time. She was 9 months old and had absolutely no conception of the word no. In the ensuing nearly two years I have expressed on several occasions regret that I got this dog and not some sweet and dumb doofus dog instead. I would not now, of course, part with the T-phus for any reason and love her dearly, and this is a love that is returned constantly. She is not, however, a dog to take to the park, or friends’ houses, or to leave out with the kids, or to let loose for a good romp in the woods. Tending Tulip is not carefree and she is not a happy-go-lucky mutt that goes great in any situation. She is however, extraordinarily cuddly, clean, and learned to quit trampling the flower beds by me putting a ring of twine around them and telling her not to cross it. The two fenced acres satisfy the unbelievable energy that she has. I would not consider one without a large fenced in yard or a habit of running marathons. Once we agreed with her notion that she belonged wither on the bed or the couch with us everything got better.

The vet told me it was a good thing that Licky Von Braun (AKA Tulip) had had her tail cropped as they have a tendency to break due to their length. Her ears are super floppy and cute, though.

StG, yes, that is the color Cinna (short for Cinnamon) was. She still had her long tail and floppy ears. I’ve seen dogs that color at PetSmart while shopping, and they looked like your Jake. I can’t tell how cute he is from that angle though!

He owned Cinna before I knew him. His then-wife took her to the shelter while he was at work, because she was afraid that a Doberman would “turn on the kids and bite them”. She’s an idiot.

What kind of dog does she have now? Pit Bull. AFAIK, he’s on his third strike with biting people, and she refuses to keep him on a leash.

Did I mention that she’s an idiot?

Kuboydal, I’m definitely coming to the conclusion that this doggie is going to be a bit more work than an equal weight of cats.

That tail-breaking thing is just bizarre!

Tail breaking amongst long tailed dogs is not uncommon. And, considering the joy that Spastica Elastica (AKA Tulip) expresses with her wee nub when she sees us, it’s not too hard to imagine. Please keep in mind that I did get Tulip from the pound at nine months and she didn’t even flinch when any common commands were uttered. That completely mystified me. She’s a tad small at 70 lbs and is quite a handful. I was trying to impress upon you the fact that the breed might not be for the casual dog owner. I felt that my experience with big brown german bitches would qualify me to be in charge of her care and I was seeking a dog known for intelligence and Food Guy worship (my Maddie was a tad bit too independent.) Tulip is a wonderful dog and I love her, but I will not take her hiking and that does make me sad. She taught the Freeloaders (AKA the Volunteer Security Department) in the front yard but does tend to escalate her play and I’ve had a few vet bills from that. I will let her out of her Supermax Lockdown pen when we get home and we will romp about the yard for an hour and she will assault me with smooches and tomorrow morning after the first snooze she will sneak into bed betwixt us for some serious cuddles. Tulip is a hell of a dog, but certainly not for everyone.

There are a surprising number of Doberman rescue groups. You might want to ask them why.

On the plus side… did I mention she is a cuddly super sweet cutie pie that smells nice, seeks to please, never sheds, and just can’t wait to hear some weird sounds from my mouth that will tell her what to do next?

My dobes are sweet peaceful dogs that get along well with other dogs. They don’t like bicyclists going past the house, but I can let then run on the farm. I let them run about 4:00 in the morning and they’re ready to come in at 6:00 am. After a day in the house they go out with me when I feed the horses and run a bit. They’re good when people come here - protective but not aggressive. THey love other family members they know. I can take them anywhere. A while back we went to the dog park, and they were fine. It’s true that some people are intimidated by them, but it’s certainly not bcause of any behaviour on their part.

After much wheedling, I have managed to get my teenager to help me post a picture. (I should really get my own camera someday). Puppy

Awwww sweet doggy.

Well, she looks sweet, but she’s a handful! We’ve decided to name her Lilith.

ooohh that’s such a sweet little lady! Kong toys filled with peanut butter will soon be your friend.

Squeeeee!!! (I’ve been wanting to do that.)

What a cute little doglet!!!
