So I did a thing (Dog adoption)

My niece called and said the mother of a patient in their clinic had a 2 year old doberman, and it was just too much work for her and the dog needed a new home. The dog was overweight and just kept as an outside dog, with minimal interaction. I went Friday to meet her, and here was this obese girl, trembling and peeing submissively. I picked her up Sunday morning.

The “2 year old” dog is actually 5 1/2 years old. No vetting since her puppy shots in 2021. Sad thing is, no one came out to say goodbye to her. The guy pulled her from the mom’s backyard with a leash around her neck - she didn’t even have a collar. Loaded her into the back of my car and turned and left. She’s fat, her coat is dull, and I’m praying she doesn’t have heartworm. She’s chilling out on the porch of my shed, not ready to come in the house, but leaving her safe spot to check out the big yard, and starting to play with my other dogs. I really didn’t want or need another dog, but I have such a soft spot where dobies are concerned. No pix yet, hopefully soon.

That dog sounds nice and I hope she’ll come around for you. It’s happened to me that any complexity fades when the dog starts loving people.

Thank you for rescuing.

If she’s already socializing well with other dogs, that’s a good sign. Maybe she had some good times when she was younger, and will gradually realize that she’s got more good times coming now.

I expect you’ve already got a vet trip scheduled.

She’ll be fine. She’s already coming to me for hugs.

Called the vet this morning. She’s interacting with the dogs, but not socializing much yet. Chasing, sniff, but doesn’t feel too comfortable. Which is fine, because I’d rather they not have conflict. I’m not pushing it.

You have a heart of gold!

I hate to see pets in bad situations.

It sounds like you are off to a good start.

Congratulations, and I’m sure you two will be very happy together!

Sounds like a vet visit for a health checkup is in order. My dog was always on a heartworm + anti-flea medication called Sentinel, but as the owner of other dogs I’m sure you know that a heartworm test is mandatory before starting on this sort of medication.

A healthy diet and perhaps a bath after she settles in ought to help restore her coat. You sound like the sort who will give her much-needed love and attention, and I know she will reward you for it!

Congrats on the new addition! Looking forward to seeing some photos, and keep us updated as she settles in.

Yes, you did a thing, @StGermain. You did a good thing.

Kudos to you for taking on a neglected sweet doggie who needed a loving home. I believe she will reward you for a lifetime for your gift to her.

We definitely want pics when you can!

You sound like you have a clue what to do. So I won’t offer advice

Just tell you how my sweet Bayliss settled in amazingly quickly.

He’s the joy of my life.

If you get a measure of that kinda love you are blessed. Trust me.

So happy for the both of you!

Yay! You @StGermain !!

So lovely to hear! I’ll even forgive you for not posting any recent pictures!

Hopefully the OP will soon post pictures of … hey! We don’t even know her name!

Thank you for adopting her. Also looking forward to learning her name and seeing pics. When you’re ready.

You really are a saint! I’m so glad you crossed her path. I love the Dobes too, they’re the most wonderful dogs.

It sounds like she hadn’t put much work into her at all.

I’m sure there’s a special place in the afterlife for people like you. And I’m equally sure it’ll be full of dogs!

Good work.

Her name is tentatively Poppy. She has a vet appt next Wednesday.

Poppy

If anyone can take those pictures and post them, I’d appreciate it. I can never do it right.

Hi Poppy puppy!

Poppy looks very sweet. I see she has a proper collar now!

Here’s another image where I cropped the original and enhanced the contrast …

I’m not a dog person (cats are my thing), but having rescued a few neglected cats, I can certainly appreciate anybody who rescues an animal.

You done good, @StGermain . Looking forward to hearing about how your dog is growing and thriving!

My heart breaks when I hear of abused or neglected dogs. So happy this beautiful girl and you found each other.
