My niece called and said the mother of a patient in their clinic had a 2 year old doberman, and it was just too much work for her and the dog needed a new home. The dog was overweight and just kept as an outside dog, with minimal interaction. I went Friday to meet her, and here was this obese girl, trembling and peeing submissively. I picked her up Sunday morning.
The “2 year old” dog is actually 5 1/2 years old. No vetting since her puppy shots in 2021. Sad thing is, no one came out to say goodbye to her. The guy pulled her from the mom’s backyard with a leash around her neck - she didn’t even have a collar. Loaded her into the back of my car and turned and left. She’s fat, her coat is dull, and I’m praying she doesn’t have heartworm. She’s chilling out on the porch of my shed, not ready to come in the house, but leaving her safe spot to check out the big yard, and starting to play with my other dogs. I really didn’t want or need another dog, but I have such a soft spot where dobies are concerned. No pix yet, hopefully soon.
If she’s already socializing well with other dogs, that’s a good sign. Maybe she had some good times when she was younger, and will gradually realize that she’s got more good times coming now.
She’ll be fine. She’s already coming to me for hugs.
Called the vet this morning. She’s interacting with the dogs, but not socializing much yet. Chasing, sniff, but doesn’t feel too comfortable. Which is fine, because I’d rather they not have conflict. I’m not pushing it.
Congratulations, and I’m sure you two will be very happy together!
Sounds like a vet visit for a health checkup is in order. My dog was always on a heartworm + anti-flea medication called Sentinel, but as the owner of other dogs I’m sure you know that a heartworm test is mandatory before starting on this sort of medication.
A healthy diet and perhaps a bath after she settles in ought to help restore her coat. You sound like the sort who will give her much-needed love and attention, and I know she will reward you for it!
