Has anyone but me heard the new song from the John Mayer Trio, “Who did you think I was” and thought it sounded like it could easily have been a SRV & Double Trouble recording?
Yeah, that’s right. Mr. “Your body is a wonderland” Mayer. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t heard it. Lord, it rocks.
Yeah, I saw him on Austin City Limits last year, he did a lot of his poppish stuff that I’ve never really cared for, but he threw in some pretty damned good blues numbers, including a couple with Buddy Guy sitting in. At one point, they broke out (as I recall) SRV’s Pride and Joy, which, while bordering on being sacreligious, was actually not half bad.
It’s gotta take a huge pair to go on the ACL stage and cover Stevie straight up like that.
Pride and Joy is the first song that I think of when I hear Mayer’s Come When I Call.
