I totalled my car last night

I feel for you I totalled my car over Thanksgiving weekend. Luckily I was wearing my seatbelt and the airbags deployed so I was just fine.

Wow. Glad you’re ok, too. Did you have a hard time with the insurance company? I’ll find out tomorrow if the car is a total loss or not. :: dread ::

I only had liability  and no other car was involved, so dealing with the insurance company wasn’t a factor.

Sorry to hear this, Winnie. Glad you’re OK.

Thanks, GT. Sore today, but better in general. And I’ve got pics of the car!

I once was involved in a fairly minor accident with my Subaru wagon…not a huge amount of damage, but when the police came and asked if I wanted to try driving it away, I told them I smelled gas and would prefer to have the tow truck come, just in case. The officer smelled gas also, so it wasn’t just me. The insurance company totalled out the car based on just that…my thought that I smelled gas. They even said that because it was an older car it wasn’t worth their time and money to see if there really was a gas tank leak, or if the smell of gas actually came from the other car involved in the accident. So even though the damage was relatively minor, I lost my car, and the check wasn’t enough to buy a new used car.

So if your car is as damaged as you say, I can’t believe they would even consider repairing it!

Well, I said I’d post pics if and when I could get them - here they are. The pictures are lousy and there’s anly three. My stupid digital camera has a tremendous appetite for battery power, and if it’s even slightly cold, or if the batteries are stale I don’t get many photos out of it. So here’s four AA batteries worth of pics.

I call this one “crumple zone”. Here’s a closer view - it looks like the frame is bent. Crunch.

At first, when I got a look at it in the daylight I though it didn’t look so bad. But then I looked closer and looked around at some of the other cars in the wrecking yard and decided the damage is pretty bad after all. The adjuster is going today to do his thing. I was a little “skittish” driving to the office this morning. Bah.

And here’s the “before” pic.

Have a look - I posted pics.

Really impossible to judge, just from the pix, but I’d say it’s entirely possible you’ll be driving it in a few days. Curious that the airbags didn’t deploy though. I’d be wanting an explanation for that.

Yak racks. Ya paddle?

Two wheels. Down hill.

Oh, I’m sorry. I’ve ripped of the corner of my car a few times and it always hurts to look at your baby mangled like that.

I’m glad you’re OK and best of luck with your leg feeling better.

Gravity – whoever voted in that law did a good thing.

If you were a famous vocalist and the cars were switched (you in the SUV and you hit a scion), there would be people on this very board quite possibly calling for you to be spending the next 10 years of your life in jail.

I’m glad you are okay (relatively). Good luck with getting everything settled out.

Yup. Definitely in the top ten all-time greatest inventions ever.

I just got off the phone with the appraiser. They are going to write the car off as a total loss. He said he got to $9,700, and that was just the easily visible damage that he could see. He tried to turn the engine over and of course it won’t start, and based on what he could see, it is likely there would likely substantial mecanical repairs necessary as well.

I just can’t believe it. To be honest, I’m relieved. The car would never have been the same again.

Oh, well.

Wow, Winston. Glad to hear you’re OK, even though the car is toast.

Sorry to hear about your accident, but I’m glad to hear that the insurance company is going to pay out. Are you going to keep your car to tinker around on, or are you going to sell it for scrap or something?

I don’t think I’ll get the car. It’s financed, so I think the bank will want to “dispose” of it themselves. It would be fun to ebay the bits 'n pieces that aren’t crushed, though.

This is a first for me, so I’m not really sure how it all works. I guess I’ll find out, though.

When I totaled my 6 month old, financed car, the ambulance took me away, and the tow truck took the car away. Three days later, after I’d contacted my insurance company, the tow company called to ask me if I wanted anything out of the vehicle befor they took it to the junk yard. I got my stuff, the bank got their money from the two insurance companies, and I was left with the stuff out of the car, and 22 stitches.
I had to start over with a new car.
